FORMS OF THE EQUATIONS

FORMS OF THE EQUATIONS OF LINES
Standard Form

Point Slope Form

Slope Intercept Form

 Two-Point Form

Two – Intercept Form

Linear Equation in two variables may be written in different forms,
but all of them still represent the same line.

Point Slope Form

The equation of the line with a slope, m, and passing through a specific point ( x1 ,y1)is
Example 1: Write the point-slope form of the line with a slope of 3 which
passes through the point (2, 5).

The slope is given as m = 2, and the point (-3, 1) has coordinates of x1 = 3 and
y1= 1. Now plug the known values into the slope-intercept form to get the final
answer.
Example 2:
Slope Intercept Form
The linear equation written in the form is in slope-intercept form where:
m is the slope, and b is the y-intercept.
Example 1: Write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form with a slope of
−5 and a y-intercept of 3.

The needed information to write the equation of the line in the form y = mx + b are
clearly given in the problem since

m=−5 (slope)
b=3 (y-intercept)
Substituting in y = mx + b, we obtain

By having a negative slope, the line is

decreasing/falling from left to right, and
passing through the y-axis at point (0, 3).
Two-Point Form
Two points lying on a line will also uniquely determine the line. The
following figure shows two points A(x1, y1) and B(x2, y2) lying on a line:

How do we find the equation of this line?

We first find the slope of this line using the two points, and then use the
point-slope form. The formula for the slope of the straight line is given below
Example 1
Determine the point-slope form of the line passing through the points
(−3,−5) and ( 2,−15).

Begin by solving the slope since two points are given.

Let (−3,−5) and (2,−15) be the first and second point, respectively. This implies
that their coordinates are as follow:
• Plug the values in the slope formula then simplify

The value of the slope is m = −2.

Write the point-slope in two ways, and show that they are
equivalent equations.
• Using the second point (2,−15) and
• Using the first point (−3,−5) and
slope m =−2:
slope m =−2:
Either point will give us the same equation.

Since we can substitute either point, the equation of a line can also be written as:

You can directly substitute each point to the formula.
