Strategies in teaching procedures

PROCEDURE
 An established or official way of doing something.
 Procedures are action oriented. They outline steps
to take, and the order in which they need to be
taken. They’re often instructional, and they may be
used in training and orientation. Well-written
procedures are typically solid, precise, factual,
short, and to the point.
Importance of following procedures in
learning mathematics
 Math is built upon a logical structure of patterns, rules, and
procedures. The use of basic rules and sequences of steps
(algorithms) helps students compute math more effectively.
Moreover, many rules and algorithms (such as the rule for
multiplying by zero, steps for column addition, and the
process for long division) are based upon numerical
relationships and important math concepts. An understanding
of rules and procedures in math fosters an understanding of
mathematical concepts and the ability to solve problems with
computation.
Relating two or more operations in finding
solution:
Examples:
4 plus the product of 5 and the quantity of 7 minus 3 is
______.
 A quarter of the difference between 18 and 6, added 6 is ___.
 The square of 4 plus 1 is added to 23 then subtracted by the
quotient of 15 and 3.
 The difference between 15 and 3 is divided by 4, then added
by the product of 7 and 3 squared.
Procedures in solving math problem

 Step 1: Understand the problem.

 Step 2: Devise a plan (translate).
 Step 3: Carry out the plan (solve).
 Step 4: Look back (check and interpret).
Problem 1

 Ryan, John, and Paul has 76 stamps in total. If

Ryan’s stamps is 12 more than John’s stamp and
Paul stamps is twice the sum of Ryan’s and John
stamps. How many stamps does Paul have ?
Problem 2

 Jason needs a total of 123 sticks that are 12 inches, 8

inches and 4 inches in length for his school project. The
sum of 12 inches sticks and 8 inches sticks are 83 sticks,
the difference between 8 inches sticks and 4 inches sticks
are 13 sticks and the difference between 4 inches sticks
and 12 inches sticks are 10 sticks. How many 12, 8, and 4
inches sticks does Jason’s need for his project ?
Translate to Mathematical sentence then
solve the following.
 1. 4 multiplied by the quantity of 7 plus 4, minus 3
times the quantity of 10 subtracted by 1 is
_______?
 2. ¾ quantity of 6 plus 2, plus 3 times the quantity
of 8 minus 2 divided by 2 is ____?
 3. 7 times 15 divided by 3 minus 3 times quantity
of 6 minus 9 is _____?
Translate to Mathematical sentence then
solve the following.
 4. The quantity of 23 minus ⅔ of 15, divided by 2
is _____?
 5.99 divided by 11 subtracted by ¾ of 8, plus 1 is
_______?
Problem solving:

 Jane went to a book shop and bought a book.

While at the store, Jane found a second interesting
book and bought it for ₱4000. The price of the
second book was ₱500 less than three times the
price of the first book. What was the price of the
first book?
Problem solving

 At first, Ping had 60 textbooks and some

storybooks. After she gave away 10 textbooks and
20% of the storybooks, she had a total of 118
books left. How many storybooks did Ping have at
first?
