Identify the tools?

Auger brace Soldering tools

Snap ring
LESSON 1
SELECT ELECTRIC AND
HYDRAULIC TOOLS
Objective
At the end of the lesson the learners are able to:

Identify tools, equipment and materials.

Identify electric and hydraulic tools for the task.

Inspect tools and equipment
Report damaged tools
ELECTRICAL TOOLS AND MATERIALS:

• They have made tasks like repairing and building much easier,
turning some of the most tedious projects into something that
only takes a short while to accomplish.
Plier- They could be with insulated or uninsulated handles. The handle insulation is
not considered sufficient protection alone. Other safety precaution must be
observed.

The common types of pliers:

Slip joint- They are handy for holding or bending flat or round stock, can crimp sheet metal,
loop a wire, cut soft wire nails.
Diagonal cutting- They cut wire by indenting and wedging a cable apart (as opposed to
shearing like scissors).

Side cutting- Diagonal pliers are pliers

intended for the cutting of wire. The plane
defined by the cutting edges of the jaws
intersects the joint rivet at an angle
Long nose- are good for reaching into tight spots where regular pliers are unwieldy

Snap ring- is a hand tool used for

installing and removing snap rings
Screw drivers- are used to drive and pullout screws. They come in various sizes
and shapes and with either sharp or square tips. The width of the screw driver
should match the width of the screw

• Common types of screw drivers are:

Flat Screw- a flat wedge-shaped tip that fits into a slot in the head of a screw.
Philip Screw- that is designed to be used with a type of screw (called a Phillips-head screw)
that has a slot in its top that looks like a cross.

Offset- is a type of hand tool used to drive

screws to secure a fixture. An offset screwdriver
features two ends at right angles to the shaft,
allowing them to be used with screws in tight
spaces.
Wire puller (fish wire)- is used to Pull wires into the conduit or raceway.

EMT bender- is a tool used to bend

electrical metal tubing.
Drilling Equipment -Is needed to make holes in building structure for passage of
wires and conduit.

Electric drill- a rotating power drill powered by an electric motor. type of: power drill. a power
tool for drilling holes into hard materials.
Auger brace- is a hand tool used with a bit (drill bit or auger) to drill holes, usually
in wood. Pressure is applied to the top and the tool is rotated with a U-shaped grip

Hand drill- is a manual tool that converts and

amplifies circular motion of the crank into
circular motion of a drill chuck.
Soldering tools- are used in making splices and taps connections of
wires
Hammers- are used to drive and pull-out nails. They are made of either hard steel or plastic.
A claw hammer with fiberglass insulated handle is specially designed for electricians.

Common examples of hammer are:

Claw hammer- a round head for driving nails, the claw end is very bit
as useful for prying, splitting, wood, tearing drywall and other small
demolition tasks.
Ball peen hammer- is useful for many tasks, such as striking punches and chisels (usually
performed with the flat face of the hammer).

Mallet (Plasticor rubber hammer)- are used

to bend and shape sheet metal
Measuring tools and instrument. The electrician uses the following measuring
tools and devices to measure value of voltage, current and resistance, wire length,
opening sizes of wire, conduit and other items.

Pull push rule- A push-pull ruler is a tape measure that can be wrapped together
in a compact case. It is used to measure long, short and straight lengths
Vernier Caliper- We can measure the internal and external dimensions and even
the height of an object with accuracy. It can measure up to one- hundredth of a
millimeter.

Wire gauge- measures a wire's cross sectional

area. Knowing the gauge is important because it
determines how much electric current a wire can
carry without being damaged—this quantity is
called ampacity.
Multi tester- is an electronic measuring instrument that combines several
measurement functions in one unit. A typical multi meter may include features such
as the ability to measure voltage, current and resistance.

Ammeter- can measure a wide range of

current values because at high values
only a small portion of the current is
directed through the meter mechanism.
Sawing and cutting tool. Two of the commonly used types of saw are:

Hack saw- is a type of hand tool designed specifically for cutting through materials
such as plastic, steel, and other metals.

Keyhole saw- Also known as jab or compass

saw, a keyhole tool has a dagger-like point at
the tip of the blade to poke through soft
materials such as drywall and paneling. The
saw can cut small shapes in traced-out drywall,
plywood and wood.
Wires and Cables- A Wire is a single, usually cylindrical, flexible strand or rod of
metal.
Stranded wire- are compressed and insulated with non-conductive materials.
Stranded wire is more flexible, making it ideal for connecting electronic components
in cramped spaces or for twisting and bending to fit intricate geometries

Solid wire- is a much heavier, thicker

product than stranded wire. It is ideal for
outdoor use where more durability and
higher currents are required.
Cables- are composed of two or more electric conductors insulated from one
another. They are larger than wires
Electrical Boxes Electrical boxes are made of steel and nonmetallic
materials(plastic). Metal boxes are made of #14 heavy galvanized steel and
available in four principal shapes: square, octagon, rectangular, and circular.
Utility Box/Junction Box- a box that houses electrical sockets, switches, or other
fixtures, also known as an electrical box. Junction box, a box that houses electrical
connections.
• Octagonal box- is a common type of box that is typically used for installing light
fixtures on a wall or ceiling

Square box- come in standard depths of 1

1/4 to 2 1/8 inches, but their square corners
give them additional interior space, providing
maximum volume for multiple conductors and
connectors.
Circuit breaker box- is essentially a big switch that safely distributes the supply of power to
your house. The circuit breaker box also houses other smaller sub-switches that connect
with specific areas of your house.

Safety switch box- is a device that is designed to

protect you from electric shock from the electricity
running through the wiring in your home. They work
by cutting off the electricity to a particular area of your
home
Fuses and circuit breakers- Fuses and circuit breakers are electrical protective devices
which are used to interrupt the flow of current when short circuit or over current occurs.
They are available in different sizes and shapes and ratings.
The common types are:

Cartridge fuse- used to protect electrical appliances

such as motors, air-conditions, refrigerator, pumps etc,
where high voltage rating and currents are required.
Knife blade fuse- is the big brother to the ferrule- type. It is similarly shaped but has a flat
metal blade on each end. Knife-blade fuses are used to protect circuits above 60 amps up
to 600 amps.

Molded- case Circuit breaker (3-pole type

shown)- is a type of electrical protection device
that is used to protect the electrical circuit from
excessive current, which can cause overload or
short circuit.
Switch- It is an electrical device which is used to turn ON and OFF the circuit.

Fitting and Accessories- These are some

electrical materials which are commonly used to fit
wiring devices during wiring installation.
