Definition

a mathematical function relating the output or

response of a system such as a filter circuit to the
input or stimulus.
 is the ratio of Laplace Transform of
output(response) to the Laplace transform of the
input(stimulus), when all the initial conditions are
assumed to be zero.
Definition
 Given a general nth-order, linear, time-invariant
differential equation,

 + + …… + c(t)
= + + …… + r(t)
where c(t) = is the output
r(t) = is the input
Definition
 Taking the Laplace transform
 snC(s) + sn-1C(s) + …… + C(s) + initial condition
terms involving c(t)
=smR(s) + sm-1R(s) + …… + R(s) + initial
condition terms involving r(t)
If we assume that all initial conditions are zero,
this equation reduces to
(sn+ sn-1 + …… + )C(s) =sm + sm-1+ …… + ) R(s)
Definition:
G(s) =
where: G(s) is the transfer function in the Laplace
form
C(s) is the output function in the Laplace form
R(s) is the input function in the Laplace form
Definition:
G(s) =

where: K = gain factor of the transfer function

z’s = zeroes
=roots of the numerator that makes the
transfer function zero
p’s = poles
= roots of the denominator that makes the
transfer function infinite
Example1:
Find the transfer function of the system given by:
3 + 7 + 5y = + 4 + 3x
Where : y = output
x = input
Solution:
3[Y(s) –sy(0) –y’(0)] + 7[sY(s) - y(0)] + 5Y(s)
= [(s) –sx(0) –x’(0)] + 4[sX(s) - x(0)] + 3X(s)
Example:
3[Y(s)] + 7[sY(s)] + 5Y(s)
= [(s)] + 4[sX(s)] + 3X(s)
Y(s) [+ 7s + 5] = X(s)[+ 4s + 3]
G(s) = =
Example2:
G(s) =
Y(s)[] = X(s)[2s + 1]
+6sY(s) +9Y(s) = 2sX(s) + X(s)
Taking the Inverse Laplace
+ 6 +9y(t) = 2 + x(t)
