MAINTENANCE of

TOOLS, MATERIALS
and EQUIPMENT IN
NAIL CARE
SANITIZATIO
N vs.
STERILIZATIO
N
SANITIZATION

The application of measures to

promote public health and
prevent the spread of
infectious diseases.
IZ ATI ON
STERIL

The process of
destroying all living
micro-organisms.
STERILIZATION - the process of
destroying all living micro-
organisms.

SANITIZATION - process of
destroying some, but not all micro-
organisms.
What is the difference
between
DISINFECTANT
and ANTISEPTIC?
A DISINFECTANT is a
substance used to control
micro-organisms on non-
living surfaces such as
tools, equipment, and
furniture/ fixtures.
An ANTISEPTIC is an agent
that prevents the
multiplication of micro-
organisms. Since it is milder
than a disinfectant, it can be
used directly on the skin.
After every working
session, the following
should be done:
Tools which are made of
plastic should be kept clean
1 and sanitized properly in
preparation for the next nail
care procedure.
Empty bottles and
2 containers are discarded
in a covered trash bin.
Used treatment products
and other chemicals are
3 stored, arranged and
properly labeled in the
cabinet.
Finger bowls must
4 be sanitized before
use.
The hand and foot spa
machines must be flushed
with a solution of about 5%
5 bleach and circulate the liquid
through the system for at least
10 minutes.
Leave the solution in the hand
and foot spa machines
overnight or at least 5-10
6 hours before draining the
machines so that they are
thoroughly sanitized.
Table tops and door
handles are wiped with
7 disinfectant and the floor
should be mopped with
disinfectant as well.
Metal tools and
instruments must be
sterilized following proper
8 sterilization
techniques. After the
process, store in a dry
cabinet until needed.
Tools/Implements which are
made of porous materials such as
nail files, buffers, nail brushes

9
and orangewood sticks can
harbor bacteria easily. Since they
are wood products which cannot
be sterilized, these tools should
not be reused.
Waste materials should be disposed
properly in an enclosed waste bin
fitted with

10
polythene bag. The bin should be
sanitized with disinfectant regularly in
a well ventilated area. Remember to
wear protective gloves while doing
this.
Contaminated wastes
should be disposed off as
11 recommended by local
authority.
Any tool or equipment in
poor condition must be
repaired immediately or
12 disposed properly so as not to
pose danger to the clients as
well as the beauticians.
SANITATION
There are three steps to manage
health and safety at work:

(1.) Spot the Hazard (Hazard

Identification),
(2.) Assess the Risk (Risk
Assessment) and
(3.) Make the Changes (Risk
Control).
Examples of Frayed electrical
workplace cords (could result in
hazards include: electrical shock)
Boxes stacked
Examples of precariously (they
workplace
could fall on
hazards include:
someone)
Noisy machinery
Examples of (could result in
workplace
damage to your
hazards include:
hearing)
During working hours, you
must remain alert to
anything that may be
BE
dangerous. If you see, hear
ALERT! or smell anything odd, take
note. If you think it could be
a hazard, tell someone.
Assessing the risk
means working out how
2. Assess likely it is that a hazard
will harm someone and
the Risk
how serious the harm
could be.
Whenever you spot a
hazard, assess the risk
2. Assess by asking yourself two
the Risk questions:
1. How likely is it that the
hazard could harm me or
2. Assess someone else?

the Risk 2. How badly could I or

someone else be harmed?
(1) Ask for instructions and
training before using
equipment,
2. Assess
(2) Ask for help moving or
the Risk lifting heavy objects, and
(3) Tell someone if you think
a work practice could be
dangerous.
If you are not sure of
2. Assess the safest way to do
the Risk something during
work experience,
always ask for help.
It is your employer's
responsibility to fix hazards.
3. Make the Sometimes you may be able
Changes to fix simple hazards
yourself, as long as you
don't put yourself or others
at risk.
For example, you can
pick up things from
3. Make the
the floor and put
Changes them away to
eliminate a trip
hazard.
