13 RULES IN PLAYING
TABLE TENNIS
RULE #1

A game is decided by 11 points. A game must be won by a gain of two

points. In most cases, a match consists of the best three of five games.
RULE #2

Each table side alternates serving two points at a time. EXCEPTION: When
the score is tied 10-10 ("deuce"), service alternates at each point.
RULE #3

Hold the ball in your open palm behind your table end. Toss at least 6"
straight up and strike it on the way down. It must hit your side of the table
and then the other side. NOTE: Once the ball leaves the server's hand, it is
in play and so counts as the receiver's point if the ball is missed or mis-hit.
RULE #4

There are no rules about where the ball can land on your or your opponent's
side of the table. It can bounce twice or more on your opponent's side
(which is your point), bounce over the side, or even hit the edge.
RULE #5

The serve must bounce in both the server's and the receiver's right court
(NOTE: landing on the center line is fair). After their team has served twice,
doubles partners switch places.
RULE #6

In table tennis, can the ball hit the net? Yes, if it touches the top of the net
and then lands as a legitimate hit during a match. However, not when
serving. If a served ball hits the net on its way over but otherwise legally
bounces in play, it is considered a "let" serve and must be redone. There is
no limit to the number of times this can occur.
RULE #7

In a match, doubles partners must alternate hitting balls, regardless of where

the ball lands on the table.
RULE #8

In regular tennis, the ball can be "volleyed" (hit the ball before it bounces
on your side of the net). However, this results in a point for your opponent
in table tennis. NOTE: When your opponent hits a ball that sails over your
end of the table without touching it and then hits you or your paddle, that is
still your point.
RULE #9

If you hit the ball during a match or serve and it bounces back over the net
after hitting your opponent's side of the table (due to extreme spin), that is
your point.
RULE #10

There is no rule violation if the ball touches your paddle hand and results in
a legal hit; play will continue as usual. All fingers and the hand area below
the wrist are included in your paddle hand. But what if the ball comes into
contact with a player's body somewhere else during a tennis match? For any
reason, you may not touch the ball with your non-paddle hand. It will earn
your opponent one point. Your point is still valid if your opponent's hit sails
over your side of the table without touching it and hits any part of you or
your paddle.
RULE #11

You may make contact with the ball or the table with your paddle hand (for
example, after reaching in to return a short serve) or with other parts of your
body. NOTE: If the table moves at all as a result of your touch during a
match, it is your opponent's point.
RULE #12

Even if a legal serve or hit bounces sideways, it is still considered valid if it

bounces the top edge of the horizontal tabletop surface. The vertical sides of
the table are not part of the legal playing surface.
RULE #13

If there is no referee present during a match and the players disagree on a

particular call, the "honor system" applies, and the players must either agree
or play the point over.
SK I L L S
IN TA BL E TE NN IS
fOREHAND/FOREHAND
DRIVE

It occurs when the ball approaches the side on

which the player is holding the paddle, the
player hits the ball back over the net. This
action should resemble striking the ball with
the palms.
BACKHAND/BACKHAND
DRIVE

This is used when the ball travels to the side

of the player that is not holding the paddle and
the ball travels too quickly for the player to
utilize a forehand drive, they must instead use
a backhand drive, using the back of the paddle
to send the ball back over the net.
SERVING

It initiates the start of a rally. It is done by

striking the ball from one's hand; the ball
should bounce once on your side of the table
before landing on your opponent’s side. The
most basic form of it is forehand and
backhand serve.
PUSHES

It is used when there is a short ball, when a

ball lands next to the net. This motion is done
by short chopping movement that generates
enough force for the ball to cross the net
FLICK

It is similar to the pushes where the ball lands

close to the net but it is more aggressive. It
uses a quick motion of the wrist and elbow to
get the ball right back over the net.
SPINNING THE BALL

It is important both offensively and

defensively because it makes it difficult for
your opponent to read your next move. There
are four types of spin; Topspin, Backspin,
right side spin, left side spin.
LOOPS

The most common offense used to put spin on

the ball, commonly topspin, which makes it
more difficult for their opponent to return the
ball.
fOOTWORK

Table Tennis players should be able to

move their feet quickly. They need to be
able to move side to side and in and out.
SPEED

Being fast is important to be able to compete

at a higher level of table tennis. A competitive
table tennis player has a fast serve and swings
in addition to quickness in their gameplay.
