Type 1. Probable condition
Talk about future that possible to happen if the
condition is fulfilled.

If + S + V1, S + will + V1
(is, am, are)

Ex. If you study hard, you will pass the exam


If it rains, we will cancel the trip
Type 2. Improbable condition
Impossible to happen because it’s contrary to the
fact (unreal).

If + S + V2, S + would + V1
(were)
Ex. If you studied hard, you would pass the exam
Meaning: You don’t study hard so you don’t
pass the exam
If you were my girlfriend, I would pick you up
Meaning: I don’t pick you up because you are
not my girlfriend
Type 3. Impossible condition
Impossible to happen because only
imagining something in the past that
didn’t happen. Usually used to express
regret.
If + S + had + V3, S + would +
have + V3
Ex. If you had studied hard, you would have
passed the exam
