VERBS
A verb expresses an action or a state
of being. It completes the sentence.
Kinds of Verbs
1. Action Verbs
◦ they express actions
ACTION VERBS
Examples
I go to the province once a year.
My cousins plan our daily activities.
Joey runs every morning to keep himself active.
Kinds of Verbs
2. Auxiliary verbs
◦ They are also known as the helping
verbs.
◦ They are used together with the main
verb to show the tense of the verb.
◦ The auxiliary verb + the main verb
makes the verb phrase.
AUXILIARY VERBS
Examples
We are preparing for the occasion.
You have helped us do our work.
The children are jumping because of the joy they are feeling.
A dog is running towards its owner.

3. Linking verbs
◦ They show relationship between
the subject of the sentence and a
noun or adjective being linked to
it.
LINKING VERBS
Examples
Our country is rich in natural resources.
We are responsible.
You are the friend I never had.
You are loved no matter who you are.
Jelaica is the daughter of the Mayor.
OTHER COMMON LINKING VERBS
Appear, become, feel, grow, look, remain, seem, smell, sound, stay, taste, and turn

Examples:
The visitors seem happy with the scenery.
They look eager to see other people.
She remained calm after the finishing the challenge.

TWO-WORD VERB
- A two-word verb is a verb with a
particle, which may either be a
preposition or an adverb.
- They are also called phrasal verbs.
Examples
1. Where do we get off?
2. I came late because our car broke down.
3. The driver told the passengers to settle
down.
4. The other passengers we were supposed to
pick up did not show up at all.
Examples
5. The driver puts on his uniform.
6. Please turn off the other aircon.

get off – to leave; to descend from


broke down – to fail to function; to stop working properly

Simple Past Tense
Expresses:
1. Action that happened at a definite past time
2. Repeated activities in the past
regular verb + -d/-ed = past form

irregular verb (change spelling) = past form


Simple Future Tense
Expresses simple action or condition in
the future time
will + base form = future tense

Mistake
Dear Diary,
I am thinking of what happened yesterday at the park. You see,
I was riding my bike when Jaime saw me. He asked me to play
baseball with him and I agreed. We were having so much fun
that I accidentally threw the ball up high. The ball broke the
windows of a house. Out of fear and shame, we ran as fast as
we could and never said sorry to the owner of the house. I feel
so guilty and awful. 1 don't want to feel this way anymore.
Tomorrow, I will be going to that house to apologize for what I
