    Comets are loose collections of ice, dust and small rocky particles that originate from the Kuiper belt or Oort cloud. Their orbits are usually long ellipses that form a coma and tail as the comet nears the sun and gases are released. Asteroids are small rocky objects too numerous to be considered planets that mainly orbit in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. One asteroid hit Earth 65 million years ago and another impact could occur. Meteoroids are rocks or dust in space that appear as meteors burning up in the atmosphere and can sometimes reach the ground as meteorites if they do not fully vaporize upon entry.
