MEASUREMENT

AREA AND PERIMETER OF PLANE SHAPES

By: Miss K. Page
SOLUTION

 (a) RS = 8m – 2m = 6m;
 x = 10m – 6m = 4m
 (b) Perimeter = 5m + 10m +5m + 2m + 3m +8m + 3m + 4m
 = 40 m
 (c)Area of Section A = 5m x 10m = 50
 Area of Section B = 3m x 8m = 24
 Area of Entire floor = 50+ 24= 74
 (d) Area of Section A = 50 ; Area of flooring boards = 1m x 0.2m = 0.2
 Number of flooring boards = 50 ÷ 0.2
Example

 Find the area of the triangle with sides  A= 18.5-15)

10 cm, 12 cm, and 15 cm using Heron’s  A = (3.5)
formula.
 A=
 Solution
 A=59.8
 First find s
 s=
 s = 18.5
 Then substitute to find the area
 A=

THE CIRCLE
Practice Questions

Use

1. Determine the area of a circle if its circumference is 44 m.

2. A dinner plate has a radius of 6 centimeters. What is the area?
3. The distance around the wheel of a truck is 9.42 feet. What is the diameter of
the wheel?

4. The area of a circular pizza is 706.5 . What is the radius of the pizza?
CXC QUESTION

 Solution
 (a)
 154 =
 =

 (b)C= 2
 C = 2 x x 7cm = 44cm.
 (ii) Since the circumference of the circle is
44cm, the perimeter of the square is also 44cm.
 Length of one side = 44÷4 = 11cm
 Area of square = 11cm x 11cm = 121
THE CIRCLE
Question. For each of the following, find the
length of the arc and the area of the sector

7cm

Use
THE CIRCLE

 Since the perimeter of a shape is the

distance around the shape, the perimeter
of a sector is the distance around the
sector.
 Perimeter of sector = radius + radius +
length of arc
Question

 Solution
 (i) Length of arc =
 (ii) Perimeter =15 +15 + 11.78= 41.78
cm
 (iii) Area of Sector = x 3.14 x 15 x 15 =
88.31
 Solution
 (i) Area of Triangle= ½ x 6 x 6 x Sin
120º = 15.59
 (ii) Area of Shaded region=Area of
sector – Area of Triangle
 Area of Sector=
 Area of Shaded region = 37.68 - 15.59 =

AREA OF COMPOUND SHAPES

 A compound shape is any shape that is made up of two or more

geometric shapes.
 The most common shapes are squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles.
 The area of the compound shapes is calculated by determining the area of
the individual simple shapes that makes up the overall shape and then adding
them together.
Example
Solution
First split the shape into two rectangles A and B and find the missing lengths.

 Area of A = 3 cm x 2 cm = 6
 Area of B = 8 cm x 3 cm = 24
 Total area = Area of A + Area of B
= 6 + 24 = 30
Determine the area and perimeter of the figure below
Find the perimeter of the shape below

 Perimeter = Arc length + Rectangular

sides
 Length of arc =
 = x 3.14 x 5cm
 = 7.85cm
 Perimeter = 7.85cm + 12cm + 5cm +
12cm = 36.85 cm
