of
Computer
What is the 4th Generation of computer
4th Generation of computers comes after the 3rd generation of
computers, the 4th generation of computer began in the 1970s, marked a
significant shift in computer technology it became more powerful,
reliable and economical than the previous generation, in fact this
generation used high-level languages like C, C++, Java, PHP, DBASE.

Computers of fourth generation used Very Large Scale Integrated

(VSLI). VLSI circuits having about 5000 transistors and other circuit on a
single chip made it possible to have microcomputers of fourth generation.
Advantages of 4th generation of computer

1. They are more reliable and efficient 4. They are portable due to their compact
compared to other generations of size
computers.

5. They are multitasking and

2. They have fantastic processing powers. multiprogramming with the time-sharing
concept.

3. They used semi-conductor memory for 6. The consumption of electricity is low

compared to the previous generation of
better performance
computers.
Disadvantages of 4th generation of computer

1. The fourth generation’s computer used

microprocessors which are complex in 4. Heavily dependent on the internet
manufacturing.

2. VLSI circuit needs more advanced 5. Microprocessors are prone to get

technology. damaged.

3. Due to network connectivity spread,

6. More storage is needed.
harmful viruses and malware are found.

Micral
André Truong Trong Thi and François Gernelle-designed the Micral for
process control.

It was a $1,700 fully-assembled computer using the Intel 8008

microprocessor. A few were sold as personal computers, but most were
used in real-time applications like tollbooths.

Micral N – First microcomputer built in 1973 by Francois Gernelle.

Micral G – Built in 1974, at 1 MHz with Intel 8008, 16K RAM.

IBM 5100
• The IBM 5100 Portable Computer is one of the first portable computers,
introduced in September 1975, six years before the IBM Personal Computer,
and eight before the first successful IBM compatible portable computer, the
Compaq Portable.

he Portable Computer was intended to put computer capabilities at the

fingertips of engineers, analysts, statisticians and other problem-solvers.

• For its time, the IBM 5100 had the unique feature of integrating everything you
needed into one housing

Altair 8800
• Ed Roberts – Founder of Altair 8800

According to Harry Garland, the Altair 8800 was the product that
catalyzed the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s. It was the first
commercially successful personal computer.

The MITS Altair 8800 was a microcomputer meant to allow hobbyists
an affordable way to continue to tinker with computers

in fact, you could play hundreds of game including Colossal Cave
