Alma, one of the owners of Grab and Eat canteen, found out
that there is an increase of Php 2 000 in their profit last
February and a decrease of Php 6 000 at the end of March
because of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). Every
month, she deposits Php 1 000 in her bank account for future
use. Due to insufficient budget, she withdrew Php 3 000 from
her savings. Luckily, she received Php 8 000 from DSWD as
one of the beneficiaries of Social Amelioration Program. But
after one week, she found out that she already spent Php 8 000
for buying rice, groceries, marketing and other needs.

If 0 is included to the set of positive
and negative numbers, then the set of
integers was formed. Integers are set
of numbers consisting of positive
numbers, negative numbers and
zero. It can be represented by {…,-3,-
2,-1,0,1, 2,3, …}. These numbers can
also be visualized using number line.

• The arrowheads indicate that the line and

the set of numbers continue indefinitely.
• On the right side of zero (0) are positive
numbers up to positive infinity (+∞) and on
the left side of zero (0) are negative numbers
up to negative infinity (- ∞). Zero is neither
positive nor negative.

The distance of a number from 0 on a

number line is called absolute value. It
is represented by |n| where n
represents any number. The absolute
value of a number is always a positive
number.
