-ing form & to infinitive

Some verbs can be followed by either the -ing form or the to infinitive.

NB: SeeGrammar reference for verbs where there is little difference in meaning.

Notice the difference in the following:

• I remembered to lock the door. (= I remembered that I had to lock the door.)
• I remember locking the door. (= I can now remember that I locked the door.)

• I tried to close the valve but the pressure was too high. (= I made an attempt to close
the valve.)
• I tried closing the valve but oil continued to leak out. (= I tested to see if closing the
valve would solve the problem.)
