EVALUATING MESSAGES AND
IMAGES OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF
TEXT
WHAT IS MEDIA MESSAGES?
• it refers to any form of communication
(information,feelings,and ideas) passed or
transmitted using a channel.
• By critically evaluating media messages,we
ensure that the ideas presented are
accurate,relevant,and appropriate to be posted or
shared with everyone.
• Turrow (2007) goes further by saying that
it is a collection of symbols that appear
purposeful organized (meaningful) to
those sending or receiving them.

STRATEGIES FOR EVALUATING MEDIA
MESSAGES
Why do we evaluate messages?

• The importance of evaluating the

effectiveness of messages is by developing
and using strategic questions to identify
strengths and weaknesses.
How do we evaluate messages?
• In order to evaluate whether a message is
effective,we can ask ourselves a series of
questions which reflect a message's
simplicity,specificity,structure,and
stickiness.
FOUR MAIN QUALITIES OF
EFFECTIVE MESSAGE

• Simplicity
• Specificity
• Structure
• Stickiness
1.SIMPLICITY

• In order to ensure that messages have

simplicity,we should ask ourselves two questions;

-is the purpose evident ?

-is the core message clear?
2.SPECIFICITY

• Refers to our choices of language and its usage in

order to ensure language is specific we may ask
ourselves;

-is language specific?

-is language concrete,rather than abstract?
-Does it use words which have adiditional meanings and could perhaps
the minsconstrued ?
3.STRUCTURE
• Ideas should be organized and easy to follow.

-Does the message have a structure?

-Is there a more effective way to arrange the ideas?
4.STICKINESS

• The message should display coherent and unity

of ideas.

-Does the idea of the message flow smoothly

EVALUATING
IMAGES
• Study and presentation images should be evaluated
like any other source,such as journal,articles or
books,to determine their quality,realibility and
appropriateness.

Three steps of evaluating an image;

1.Identifying source
2.Interpret contextual information
3.Understand implications

MULTIMODALITY
• A text or output is considered multimodal if
it uses two or more communication modes
to make meaning.
A multimodal text can either be one of the following:

Live Transmedia
In creating a multimodal text ,these three must all be
considered ;

used for communicating such as
language,gestures,and images.
