2,4 –D (2,4 –DICHLOROPHENOXYACETIC ACID)
INTRODUCTION :

2,4-D is a common abbreviation for the herbicide 2,4-

Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. It is a synthetic organic compound that is
widely used in agriculture to control broadleaf weeds in various crops,
including wheat, corn, and soybeans. 2,4-D works by mimicking the
plant hormone auxin, causing uncontrolled growth in the weeds, which
ultimately leads to their death.
It's important to note that 2,4-D has been the subject of some
controversy and concern due to its potential environmental and health
effects. Prolonged or excessive exposure to 2,4-D can be harmful to
humans and other non-target organisms. As a result, its use is regulated
in many countries, and specific guidelines and safety precautions must
be followed when applying it.
SOURCES OF 2,4- D

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) can be synthesized through chemical processes,

and it is primarily produced by chemical manufacturers. The production of 2,4-D
typically involves the chlorination of phenoxyacetic acid or phenoxyacetate esters. Here
are some common sources or ways in which 2,4-D is obtained:
1.Chemical Manufacturers: Large chemical companies and manufacturers produce 2,4-
D as a commercial herbicide product. They synthesize it through industrial chemical
processes.
2.Herbicide Products: 2,4-D is sold as an active ingredient in various herbicide
products. These products are formulated with specific concentrations of 2,4-D and may
contain other ingredients to enhance its effectiveness or safety.
3.Agricultural Supply Stores: Farmers and agricultural professionals can purchase 2,4-
D herbicide products from agricultural supply stores or distributors.
4.Online Retailers: 2,4-D herbicide products are also available through online retailers
and agricultural supply websites.
5.Chemical Suppliers: Some chemical suppliers may provide 2,4-D as a chemical
compound for research or industrial purposes.
EFFECTS OF 2,4- D ON HUMAN
HEALTH
2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) is a widely used herbicide in agriculture and
forestry. It is primarily used to control broadleaf weeds in various crops and non-
crop areas. However, like many herbicides, it can have both intended effects on weed
control and unintended effects on the environment, human health, and non-target
plants. Here are some of the effects of 2,4-D:

Intended Effects:

1.Weed Control: 2,4-D is effective in controlling a wide range of broadleaf weeds in

fields, pastures, lawns, and other areas. It works by disrupting the growth of these
plants, leading to their eventual death.
2.Selective Herbicide: 2,4-D is considered a selective herbicide because it primarily
targets broadleaf weeds while leaving grasses largely unaffected. This selectivity
makes it valuable in situations where grass crops need to be protected from weed
competition.
3.Versatility: It can be used in various formulations, such as liquid sprays, granules,
and soluble powders, making it suitable for different applications.
LIMITS OF 2,4- D

as schools, parks, and sensitive natural habitats, may be designated as no-spray zones,
where the use of 2,4-D and other herbicides is The use of 2,4-D (2,4-
dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) is subject to various limits, regulations, and restrictions in
different countries and regions due to its potential environmental and health impacts.
These limits are put in place to minimize the risks associated with the herbicide. Here
are some common limits and restrictions associated with 2,4-D:

1. Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs): Many countries have established MRLs for 2,4-
D in food products to ensure that residues of the herbicide on crops do not exceed a
certain level. These limits are designed to protect consumer safety.

2. Application Rates: There are specific recommended application rates for 2,4-D
depending on the target crop, weed species, and the stage of growth of the crop and
weeds. Exceeding these rates can result in violations of pesticide regulations.

3.Environmental Conditions: Regulations may stipulate that 2,4-D should not be

applied under certain weather conditions, such as high winds, which can increase the
risk of drift.
