Law Of Conservation

Of Angular Momentum
The law of conservation of angular momentum
states that when no external torque acts on an
object, the angular momentum of a body remains
conserved or constant
A ballet dancer can increase her
Example-1 angular velocity by folding her arms
Ballet dancers and bringing the stretched leg close
to the other leg, her moment of
inertia decreases as she is rotating
about the axis of center of rotation,
so the angular speed increases.

When she stretches her hands and

leg outward, her moment of inertia
increases due to more distance
between them and axis of rotation
and angular speed decreases to
conserve angular momentum.
When spinning, an ice skater will
Example-2 bring his or her arms closer to his
Ice-Skaters or her body in order to rotate
faster. When the moment of inertia
is decreased, he/she is rotate about
the axis of center of rotation and
angular velocity increases.

When they stretch their arms.

their moment of inertia increases
as the distance from axis of
rotation increses, and angular
speed decreases to conserve
angular momentum.
Divers pull their legs and arms
Example-3 closer to the point of rotation, the
moment of inertia decreases and
Divers the angular velocity increases. A
tighter tuck means a faster
rotation.

Then they stretch fully their arms

and legs as they enter the water so
that distance to the axis of rotation
becomes more, moment of inertia
increases and angular velocity
decreases. They enter the water
smoothly.
Example-4 When a cat jumps, it stretches
its body fully and increases the
A Cat landing distance of body parts from its
on the ground axis of rotation. Moment of
inertia increases, and the cat’s
angular velocity decreases for a
smooth landing. It prevents it
form getting injured.

The leopard climbs the trees

with the same ideology,
stretching itself, and distancing
themselves from the axis of
rotation.
Example-5 Tornados usually destroy
things that come in between it,
Tornados the inner layers of a tornado
are very-very close to the
centre of axis of rotation.
A tornado also has a spin
angular momentum with
respect to its center. As a result,
the moment of inertia becomes
very less and angular speed
becomes too high!
