OBJECTIVE:

TO ILLUSTRATE THE
DIFFERENT PROPERTIES OF
OPERATIONS ON THE SET OF
INTEGERS
2
Properties of
Operations on the
Set of Integers
CLOSURE
PROPERTY
If two integers are added/multiplied, then the sum/product is
an integer. The set of integers is closed under addition and
multiplication.

If a ∈I, and b ∈I, then (a+b) and ab is an element of I.

Example:

5+2=7
( 3 ) ( -4 ) = -12
4
COMMUTATIVE
PROPERTY
In adding/multiplying integers, changing the order of the
integers that are being added/multiplied does not change the
sum/product.

If a ∈I, and b ∈I, then a + b = b + a and ab = ba.

Example:

5+2=2+5
( 3 ) ( -4 ) = ( -4 ) ( 3 )
5
ASSOCIATIVE
PROPERTY
In adding/multiplying three integers, changing the grouping of
the integers that are either being added or multiplied does
not change the sum/product.

If a, b and c are elements of I, then (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)

and (ab) c = a (bc).

Example:

(5+2)+3=5+(2+3)
[ ( 3 )( -4 ) ] ( 5 ) = ( 3 ) [ ( -4 ) ( 5 ) ]
6
DISTRIBUTIVE
PROPERTY
Multiplying an integer to a sum gives the same result as
multiplying each addend by the integer and then adding the
products together.

If a, b and c are elements of I, then a (b + c) = ab + ac and

a (b – c) = ab – ac.

Example:

2 ( 3 + 4 ) = (2)(3) + (2)(4)
2 ( 3 - 4 ) = (2)(3) - (2)(4)
7
IDENTITY PROPERTY
Identity Property of Addition
The sum of any integer and 0 is the integer itself. Zero is
the additive identity.

Identity Property of Multiplication

The product of any integer and 1 is the integer itself. One
is the multiplicative identity.

If a ∈ I, then a + 0 = a and (a)(1) = a.

8
Example:

Identity Property of Addition

5+0=5

Identity Property of Multiplication

( 4 ) (1 ) = 4

9
INVERSE PROPERTY OF
ADDITION
There is an integer that when added to another integer gives
a sum of zero.
The sum of n + -n = 0. -n is the additive inverse of n. -n is the
opposite of n.

If a∈ I, then a + (-a) = 0.

Example:

5 + ( -5 ) = 0
10
