TOPIC: GIVING OPERATIONAL
DEFINITION
WHAT IS OPERATIONAL DEFINITION?

 States and explains the meaning of a word or phrase based

on specific context.

 In terms of research operational definition explains or

describes how the term is applied and measured in the
study.

 Operational definition is generally used by everybody.

OPERATIONAL Definition is generally brief, direct,
simple, and specific. It only answered how something is
used or how certain equipment works.
EXAMPLE:

- The fastest ball is the one that crosses the finish line before
all the other balls.

Why is it an operational definition?

Because it tells how the variable the ball applied in the

situation.
WHY SHOULD WE USE OPERATIONAL DEFINITION?

 Operational definitions put workable meaning into our

everyday terminology.

 To communicate effectively and avoid

misinterpretations, members of a term, data collectors,
and both internal and external customers and suppliers
or a certain group must use the same operational
definitions for the same concept.
 Misunderstandings waste time; but worse, they add
variation to your process. Consequently, it is vitally
important to develop operational especially if you are
doing research.

We need an operational definition because we can`t measure

anything without one, no matter how good our conceptual
definition might be.

OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS.
