Esports in Australia
Esports in Australia
To this day Australia hosts the Intel Extreme Master CS:GO tournament annually.
However other than this there are not many more notable events hosted.
The main two reasons for Australia not hosting many tournaments/events is due to:
1. It is very far globally from the West
2. There is barely any funding or investment put into the scene from the government.
After the countries biggest esports team ORDER shut down in 2022 many smaller teams became the face of
Australian esports.
The AEL also hosts much smaller non-profit events such as AEL Highschool and University tournaments, this
gives young people opportunities to see more about careers in the esports field and experience it first hand.

ESPORTS AUSTRALIA COMPARED TO UK
Similarly to the UK, Australia does not consider esports as an official sport.
However while the UK labels esports as a game in the same category as chess, Australia does not.
Due to the esports scene rapidly growing in the UK some investment has been put into the
market, this however is not the case in Australia.
For the most part the Australian Esport scene is overlooked by the government despite it’s rapid
growth in popularity and revenue.
As neither the UK or Australia classify it as an official sport the sports leagues do not have to
invest any money into the scene.
The UK hosts many more events and tournaments yearly compared to Australia, this means it has
a much bigger global reputation and has more money in it.
The UKEL has been around for much longer than the AEL, the UK Esport League was founded
all the way back in 2008 whereas the Australian version was founded in 2016. This means the UK
has had double the time to learn how the market works and how to make a lot more money.
