Important terms:
Gas- it is a fundamental state of matter composed of atoms
that are held far apart from each other.

Mass- it is the amount of gas.

Volume- it is the space a gas occupies.

Pressure- the average effect of the forces of the colliding

molecules.

Temperature- measure the hotness or coldness of an

object.

PROPERTIES OF
GAS
Objectives:
1. Define gas;

2. Identify the different properties of gas;

3. Discuss the importance of gases that

support life; and

4. Illustrate the motion of the particles

of gas in terms of its properties.

Try to analyze the motion of the gas particles when the
different properties are being applied.
In terms of volume:

Increasing the amount

of volume will allow the gas
particles to spread farther
apart. When the volume
decrease the particles will
collide more frequently with
the walls of the container.
In terms of pressure:

When the pressure

increase it pushes the
particles closer together.
When the pressure
decreases the particles of
gas are free to move about
in a larger space.
In terms of temperature:

When the temperature

decreases the average
kinetic energy of gas
particles also decreases
or it slow down. When
the temperature increase
it gain more kinetic
energy and it moves
faster.
This picture prove that gas
also have mass.
• Gas has no definite shape and size and it can
be compressed easily.

• By applying the activities we have we found out

that gases have the following properties: mass,
volume, pressure and temperature.
DIFFERENT PROPERTIES OF GAS

• Mass- it is the amount of gas. It can be expressed in mole or grams.

• Temperature- it is the measure of hotness and coldness of an

object. It can be measured in Celsius or Kelvin.

• Volume- it is the amount of space occupied by the gases. The

common unit in expressing volume of gases are liter (L) and milliliter
(ml).

• Pressure- it is the average effect of those forces of the colliding

molecules. It can be measure in atmosphere, torr, psi, cmHg, or
mmHg.
Commonly Used Units for Volume and Pressure

VARIABLE SI UNIT METRIC UNIT ENGLISH

UNIT

Volume Cubic meter (m3) Liter (L) Quart (qt)

Cubic decimeter (dm3) Milliliter (ml) Gallon (gal)
Cubic centimeter (cm3)
Pressure Pascal (Pa) Atmosphere (atm) Torr
Millimeters of mercury Lb/in2 (psi)
(mm Hg)
Centimeters of mercury
(cm Hg)
Volume units and their equivalents:

1 ml= 1 cm3 1 L= 1 dm3 1 m3= 1000 L

Temperature units and their equivalent:

0oC= 273.15 K 0 oC= 32oF

Pressure units and their equivalent:

1 atm= 760 mmHg = 76 cmHg = 760 torr = 101325 Pa = 14. 6956 psi
ITS IMPORTANT:

• Gas is everywhere and it surrounds us. There are different uses

from the air we breathe, in industry, and the atmosphere
surrounding the earth.

• We also understand the molecular perspective of matter

especially in gases.
Answer the following:

1. What is gas?
2. Give the 4 measurable properties of gas.
3. Write the important of gases in our lives.
4. What properties of gases affect the motion of the gas
particles?
Assignment:

Study and understand the Kinetic molecule

theory.
