Active listening
Active listening is the practice of listening by observing what verbal and non-verbal
messages are being sent, and then providing appropriate feedback. This form of
listening conveys a mutual understanding between speaker and listener.
Active Listening

If you were going to focus on active listening as the sub-topic for your PDC, what
would be your overall learning outcome(s)?
Active Listening
By the end of the PDC session, participants will:
• have experienced an active listening activity (warm-up)
• have a clear understanding of the features of active listening
• considered ways to adapt an active listening task to meet the needs of a particular
group of learners.
Other possible PDC topics

• Why do learners find listening so difficult? – problems, causes and possible solution

• Planning a listening lesson using pre- while- and post-listening activities

Why do learners find listening so difficult? – problems, causes and
possible solution
By the end of the session, teachers will have:
• discussed common problems about listening in class
• come up with and shared possible causes and solutions
• applied the solutions to a coursebook page
• selected two strategies / techniques they want to apply in their own classrooms
Planning a listening lesson using pre- while- and post-listening
activities
By the end of the session, teachers will:
• have discussed how they normally structure a listening lesson
• be able to categorise listening tasks into pre, while and post
• be able to evaluate their materials (coursebook) in terms of these three
categories, and if not (e.g. one task is missing), come up with solutions
• be willing to take at least one activity and use it in their classrooms.

Some more tips

• Don’t try to do too much!

• Think carefully about WHY you have chosen a particular task or activity. How
does it relate to your learning outcomes?
• Plan your instructions
• Include your materials – it is difficult to give feedback on your plans if we can’t
see the materials!
What happens next?

Each group of 4 participants needs to submit ONE plan.

Deadline for submitting plans September 19th

Email plans to duncanaawallis@gmail.com
