Cultural Studies
Is a field of study in which culture is Cultural Studies believes that we cannot
understood not just as textual or artistic “read” cultural artifacts only within the
products like books, music or films, but in aesthetic realm, rather they must be studied
the broader sense of a dynamic and within the social and material perspectives;
complexly patterned way of life.

1. History of Cultural Studies
Developed in the year 1960s with the support of a
few scholars Stuart Hall, Richard Hogart, E.P
Thompson, and Raymond Williams are all believed
to be the field's major establishers.

History of Cultura Studies
● 1960 - Cultural Studies is an academic discipline which combines political
economy, communication, sociology, social theory, literary theory, media
theory, film studies, cultural anthropology, philosophy, art history/ criticism
etc. to study cultural phenomena in various societies
● 1964 - Hoggart came up with the phrase "culture studies" after founding the
Birmingham Center for Contemporary Cultural Studies in the United
Kingdom.
● 1968 to 1979 - The most important person in the area of cultural studies is
thought to be Stuart Hall, who oversaw the Birmingham Center and
oversaw a number of ground-breaking research projects.

Stuart Hall
Stuart Hall was a Jamaican-born
British sociologist, cultural
theorist and political activist. He
was born in Kingston in 1932 then
came to the UK in the 1950s and
was later dubbed the “godfather of
multiculturalism” for his
contributions to Sociology.

Richard Hoggart

● who has died at the age of 95


following a long illness – was
the founder of the
Birmingham Centre for
Contemporary Cultural
Studies, the institutional origin
of what has become the global
field of cultural studies.

E.P. Thompson

● Thompson was an active member of the


Communist party in the 40s and 50s,
and founder of the Communist Party
Historians Group in 1946.
● He is best known today for his
historical work on the radical
movements in the late 18th and early
19th centuries.

Raymond Williams
● Born on 31st August 1921 and died on
26th January 1988 was a
Welsh socialist writer, academic,
novelist and critic influential within
the New Left and in wider culture. His
writings on politics, culture, the media
and literature contributed to the Marxist
critique of culture and the arts.

Common Theories of Cultural Studies
Cultural Construction The cultural studies theory that
various elements of social and cultural characteristics
were/are mere constructs invented by society is referred to
as cultural construction. Gender, race, ethnicity, and so on
are examples of cultural construction distinctions and
organization.

Hegemony means that a diverse culture can be ruled or
dominated by one group or class, that everyday practices
and shared beliefs provide the foundation for complex
system of domination.

Marxist Cultural Theory marxist cultural analysis is a
form of cultural analysis and anti-capitalist cultural critique,
which assumes the theory of cultural hegemony and from
this specifically targets those aspects of culture which are
profit driven and mass-produced under capitalism.

Methodology Use In Cultural Studies
Qualitative research methods are primarily used to collect
data about specifics, rather than just numbers, in the
cultural studies field. The data gathered is non-numerical,
as it instead gathers information about people's attitudes,
beliefs, opinions, experiences, behavior, etc.
