 Poverty is a state in which a person lacks the financial
resources (living on less than $1.90 a day) & essentials like
food, water, shelter, basic health care.
Key targets under SDG 1:
Progress of SDG 1:
According to Sustainable Development Report:
In 2016, the global poverty rate was 10.7%, which was down from 11.2% in 2013.
In 2017, the global poverty rate was 9.2%, which was down from 10.1% in 2015.
In 2018, the global poverty rate was 8.6%, which was down from 9.2% in 2017.
In 2019, the global poverty rate was 8.2%, which was down from 8.6% in 2018.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the first increase in global poverty rates since 1998.
The number of people living in extreme poverty increased by approximately 120 million, which
brought the global poverty rate to 9.4%.
In 2021, the global poverty rate is projected to increase for the first time in over two decades
due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It is estimated that between 88 million to 115 million
people will be pushed into extreme poverty.
In 2022, due to impact of war in Ukraine and Covid-19 will lead to additional 75 million to 95
million people living in extreme poverty.
In 2023 (till 2030),given current trends, 575 million people (nearly 7% of the world
population) will still be living in extreme poverty in 2030 as compared to 800 million people in
2015(10.8)
CHALLENGES

1) Covid-19

2) War of Ukraine

3) Limited resources

4) Political will

5) Insufficient funding

6) Lack of coordination
PAKISTAN & SDG 1:
Pakistan’s progress on SDG 1 is steady.
Poverty consistently declined in the period
from 2014-2015 until 2018-2019, with 9.3
million people lifted out of poverty line.
After that Pakistan is facing many major
challenges and by 2023 the progress is
stagnated.
