In een vorige editie van hun handboek omschrijven Roberts en Yamane het doel van de
godsdienstsociologie als volgt: “Sociology, then, focuses on the social dimension of religion –
including the manner in which religion affects society and the ways the society influences
religion.” (Roberts & Yamane 2016, 28).
Wat is godsdienstsociologie?
“Put differently, sociological theory (and, indeed, any other theory moving within the
framework of empirical disciplines) will always view religion ‘sub specie temporis’, thus of
necessity leaving open the question whether and how it might also be viewed ‘sub specie
eaternitatis’. Thus sociological theory must, by its own logic, view religion as a human
projection, and by the same logic can have nothing to say about the possibility that this
projection may refer to something other than the being of its projector. In other words, to say
that religion is a human projection does not logically preclude the possibility that the projected
meanings may have an ultimate status independent of man” (Berger 1973).
