MATERIALS, TOOLS

AND EQUIPMENT
USED IN FISH NET
WEAVING
TOOLS 2

SHUTTLE MESH / NETTING NEEDLE

IT HOLDS THE TWINE WHICH GOES IN AND OUT TO MAKE MORE MESHES, IT IS
MADE FROM PLASTIC , COPPER, HORN OF ANIMAL AND BAMBOO.
3

 MESH GUAGE
•It is used to keep the size of meshes in uniform, this tools is made
from plastic and bamboo.
4

HOOK

THIS IS AN INSTRUMENT USED TO SUSPEND THE LOOP IN PLACE

5

• SHUTTLES
- tools that are not strictly speaking,
necessary on of the most useful to have
shuttle. The shuttle hold your excess
string out of the way for you in a
fashion that makes it easier to pass the
string through small loops to make
knots. Shuttles can be made of wood,
metal, plastic, or any rigid, but not
brittle material. Netting shuttles are
sometimes referred to as netting
“needles”.
NETTING GUAGES 6

A NETTING GAUGE IS A SMOOTH, WELL-ROUNDED STICK

WITH A UNIFORM THICKNESS THROUGHOUT ITS LENGTH, SO
THAT THE LOOPS KNOTTED AROUND THE STICK ARE
OF EQUAL SIZE AND EASILY SLIP OFF. THE SIZE OF THE
GAUGE THUS DETERMINES THE SIZE OF THE MESH. GAUGES
MAY BE MADE OF BONE, IVORY, STEEL OR WOOD. IT IS ALSO
KNOWN AS A NETTING MESH, OR NEETING MESH STICK.

CUTTER/TRIMMER
IT IS USED FOR CUTTING THE TWINE

FIBERS
- Fibres can be generally defined as
thread-like structures that are
thin, long, and flexible. The two
main sources of fibres are plants
and animals.

- The obtained fibres are spun into

yarns and then woven into the best
fabrics. A single long fibre can
produce yarn for different types of
fabric
CLASSIFICATION OF FIBERS 9
- Fibers are generally classified into two:
 Natural fibers and artificial or man made fibers

Natural fibers
- Are taken from three sources such as
Minerals
Animals
Vegetables

Wire fibers
- Are from the hair of a sheep, while the cotton, kapok, ramie, hemp, and
abaca fibers are from the bodies, fruits , and leaves of plants.
MAN-MADE OR ARTIFICIAL 10

COMMON USES OF SYNTHETIC FIBERS

POLYAMIDE(NYLON)
- The continuous filament type of this fiber is commonly used for gill net and seine net. This is
used for seizing and lacing twine. The staple form fiber of this kind is commonly used in trawl
net-making and rope construction.
11

this net is produced with a special high-

density HDPE yarn, stabilised and treated
against UV, which guarantees excellent
resistance to abrasion and the bite of
marine predators, making it very suitable
for cages with on-site washing.
It is normally weaved without a
ladderproof knot in a diamond mesh to
make it easier to frame. Colours green or
black.
Characteristics:
- Excellent abrasion resistance.
- High resistence to the bite of marine
predators.
- It does not absorbe water.

Purse seine
This fiber is used in most
purse seine , dip net, and
small -scale set use this
kind of fiber long line
finishing.

Dip net
POLYVINYL ALCOHOL (VINYLON) 13

- The continuous multi-filament

Purse seini
fiber of this kind is mostly used
in dip net, purse seine net,
small-scale net and gill net.
- The staple fiber type is
commonly used in purse seine,
bottom trawl net, ropes and
long line gear construction
