Communication does not only refer to the art of talking or the verbal transmission of ideas, but also how the receiver accepts the intended message and interprets its meaning through listening, even if/she experiences different forms of disruptions or barriers. ANALYTICAL LISTENING One form of listening is analytical listening. This type of listening occurs when the receiver of the message consciously decides whether what she/he has heard is factual, analyzes and judges its validity, and accepts or rejects the message. Because of this, analytical listening is often used to resolve problems not only at home but also when dealing bigger problems such as peace talks between nations. WAYS TO SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE YOUR ABILITY TO LISTEN ANALYTICALLY IN RESOLVING PROBLEMS 1. Focus on the task at hand and avoid any form of interruption. • Have presence of mind and always be observant. • When listening to someone, focus on the message being said and not merely on other factors such as gestures, facial expressions, voice intonation and modulation, physical appearance and other aspects that might potentially take away your attention from listening intently to the speaker. 1. Focus on the task at hand and avoid any form of interruption. • These nonverbal communicative techniques also generate meaning, but verbal communication is more direct and could still be open to misinterpretation (unlike nonverbal communication). By focusing intently on the spoken intent, the problem of misinterpreting the message would less likely occur. You could immediately address a message that is unclear, vague or interruptive if you are able to zero in on the task at hand. 2. Be objective and open
• Avoid biases and assumptions. Concentrate on
what is important. If there are statements expressed by the speaker that are different from your beliefs and viewpoints or seem foreign to you, accepts and respect them. Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion. 3. If in doubt, ask constructive questions. • If some terms or concepts are unclear, ask questions, but ask them politely and cordially. Make sure that your questions are relevant, straight to the point and sensible. • Ask until you get a definite answer. Asking just for the sake of wanting to know whether the speaker knows what he/she is talking about is rude. Always put yourself in the shoes of the speaker. 4. Provide a genuine and fair evaluation of what was said. • Show your appreciation for the speaker’s effort by giving him/her an assessment that is honest and free from any one-sided commentaries. Repeat important lecture points raised during the discussion. This will show that you have paid attention and that you are an active listener. • Another important aspect of effective is speaking. The most common and frequent speaking form used by many is the spoken text. • The spoken text literally means a language that is meant to be spoken, unlike its counterpart language, which is designed to be written. • Spoken text is integral in society because it helps people freely express their emotions, insights, ideas and opinions on things or situations that matter to them. • It also highlights each unique culture, celebrates diversity, and embraces differences. • Spoken text is an expression that goes beyond mere words, but touches on the essential aspects of what it is to be human, through communication.
