What do we

celebrate on
February 14?
What organ system
in the body includes
the heart?
Introduction to the Human
Cardiovascular System
Atria – receiving chambers of the heart / accepting blood from the
body and from the lungs
Ventricles – pumping chambers / moving blood to the lungs and into
the body
tricuspid and bicuspid valves – valves between atrium and
ventricle to prevent blood from flowing backwards
Arteries - carry oxygenated blood
away from the heart to the cells, tissues
and organs of the body
Veins - carry deoxygenated blood to the
heart
Capillaries - the smallest blood vessels in
the body, connecting the smallest arteries
to the smallest veins; the actual site where
gases and nutrients are exchanged
RBC – Erythrocyte
WBC – Leukocyte
Platelet - Thrombocyte
Pathway of oxygenated blood from the lungs to the
heart and from the heart back to the lungs

DEOXYGENATED BLOOD  Superior Vena

Cava/Inferior Vena Cava  Right atrium 
(tricuspid valve)  Right ventricle  (pulmonary
valve)  Pulmonary artery  Lungs (to get
oxygen) OXYGENATED BLOOD  (pulmonary
vein)  Left atrium  (bicuspid valve)  Left
ventricle  (aortic valve)  Aorta  rest of the
body (to deliver oxygen)
