MEMORY AND

STORAGE SYSTEM
BY
P MONISHA
Introduction

● Memory is what your computer used to store data

temporarily
● While Storage is where you save the files permanently.

Computer use two types of storage

● Storing the data by CPU

● storing the result and data for future use eg. SD, Hard disk
Two types of Storage Method:
● Primary Memory
● Secondary Memory

Temporarily stored data is called Primary Memory.

( Memory refer as Primary Memory)
Permanent stores data is called Secondary Memory.
(Storage refer as Secondary Memory)
Memory Representation;

Data being worked on is stored in the computer memory. In the

memory, values are represented by sequences of binary digits,
known as bits.
 Most computers use a group of eight bits, known as a byte, to
represent a character
How does the computer know what any particular sequence of
bits represents?
bunch” of bytes or cells into which we can place data.
Each cell, known as a data item, is assigned a unique number
known as address
Random Access Memory (RAM)

● RAM is a volatile memory.

● It lost the data when power off.

● It is main Memory of computer system.

● It stores the data temporarily.

● RAM is faster than Secondary Storage.

● Ram is also known as read/ write Memory because it can perform

both read as well as write operation.
Read Only Memory (or) ROM

• ROM is the memory that stores the data

permanently,
• It can retain the data even when the power of the
computer system is switched off.
• The data can be easily read from this type of
memory but cannot be changed .
• It is less expensive as compared to RAM and
other storage devices,
• such as magnetic disk, etc
Storage system

.Storage systems are the devices—such as hard

disks, optical disks and magnetic disks—used for
data storage.

The main objective of the storage system is to

permanently store data—which can be of any type,
such as images, videos and text—for future use.

The storage systems provide the facility to use the

data at any time.
Magnetic Storage Systems

Magnetic storage systems can be defined as the

storage systems that store the data on a magnetised
medium, with the help of magnetised particles.

Magnetic tapes, magnetic disks, hard disks, floppy

disks are examples of magnetic storage systems.

The magnetic storage systems are non-volatile and

provide the facility to store any type of data, such as
text, audio, video, image, etc.

In case of magnetic storage systems, data can be

accessed randomly as well as sequentially
Optical Storage System

Optical storage is any storage method that uses a laser to store

and retrieve data from optical media.

Six categories of optical media:

● CD-ROM
● DVD ROM
● DVD RAM
• BLUE RAY
● Recordable media
● Write One Read Many (WORM)
Magneto Optical Storage

Magneto Optical (MO) storage systems include

the features of both magnetic and optical
disks.
The main objective of the MO system is to store the data used in personal computers
for a long period of time. It reads/writes data by making use of laser and optical
technologies. It has a ferromagnetic material enclosed in the plastic coating. The laser
beam used for reading data gets reflected due to the magnetic surface of the disk.

The MO system is not popular among the users because its speed is slower and
manufacturing cost is higher than other storage devices.

These optical storage systems are available in two standard forms:

● 3.5 inch form factor
● 5.5 inch form factor
Solid State Storage (SSD)

● It is type of computer storage media that

stores data electronically and has no moving
part.

● Solid State Storage is made from silicon

micro chip, because there are no moving parts.

● Require less power and produce far less heat

than spinning hard disk drives or magnetic
tapes.

eg. USB memory sticks.
