FESTIVAL
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
The Kadayawan Festival of Davao started in the year
1986 as a group of tribal festivals puts together to
showcase the thanksgiving rituals of the indigenous
tribes of Mindanao. It was previously held every third
week of August.in 2019, the usual week–long
celebration was held for a month, from August 1 to
31. The festival’s name is derived from the Mandaya
word “Madayaw”, meaning treasured or valuable.
They used to display fruits, vegetables, flowers, rice,
and corn grains on their mats and at the front of their
houses as a sign of respect for the great year that
they’ve had.

Back then, the name of the festival was called
Apo Duwaling. One of the highlights of the
Kadayawan Festival is the “Indak-Indak sa
Kadalanan”, which translates to street dancing.
This is a showcase of the diverse indigenous
cultures of the region. The festivities feature
different communities in Mindanao dancing in
vibrant costumes that highlight their indigenous
heritage. It is also one of the major annual
festivals in the Philippines

Kadayawan festival was celebrated annually in Davao City
every August. It serves as a thanksgiving event for the gift of
nature, the wealth of culture, and bounties of the harvest and
serenity of living. It also celebrates and gives tribute to the
lumads, a collective group of indigenous people living in the
city. The Kadayawan Festival is also known as a thanksgiving
of Davaoeños for nature's bountiful harvest. The festival also
offers a lot of activities and some of the most mouth-watering
delicacies which you can try during the festival. One of the
main attractions of the festival is the floral float festival.

FUN FACTS
Kadayawan is the newest name of this festival
Apo—where they believed the diwatas were—to
give thanks for their blessings. In the mid-1980s,
the city government began a festivities for unity
called “Apo Duwaling,” derived from what they
call the three royalties of Davao: Mount Apo,
durian, and waling-waling.

INTRODUCTION
The Ibalong Festival is a non-religious festival in Legazpi
City, Albay, Philippines based on the Ibalong Epic, and is
held on August. The festival celebrates the epic story
Ibalong who was accompanied by three legendary heroes,
namely Baltog, Handyong, and Bantong. The festival, is
held every year, it is set for August 10-21. Ibalon, or
Ibalong, is the ancient name of the
”Bicol Region in the Philippines”. They also recreate the
famous fights that found their way into the history of
Bicol. Moreover, the Ibalong Festival seeks to convey a
sense of warmth and generosity to all locals and tourists.

The first Ibalong Festival in Legazpi City was
in 1992. It was spearheaded by then mayor
Imelda Roces. Its purpose was to bring to the
forefront Bicol's pre-Hispanic culture, history,
and identity, acknowledging the invaluable
folklore that is Ibalong epic.

FUN FACTS
People parade through the streets while wearing
masks and costumes to emulate the appearances
of the heroes and the villains. The festival is
based on the Ibalong Epic, which tells of the story
Ibalon who was joined by three legendary heroes,
Batlog, Handyong, and Bantong reside. The three
heroes rid the town of monsters, saved the people
from a great flood, and laid the laws of the land.
