RESUMES
Your resume (sometimes called your "CV: Curriculum
Vitae") is your most important tool when applying
for a job. It doesn't matter how qualified you are, or
how much experience you have - if your resume is
poorly presented or badly written, you're going to
have trouble getting the job you want - or even an
interview.
Taking the time to work on your resume is extremely
important. This PowerPoint offers some tips and
advice on how to make your resume the best it can
be.
Resume Dos
Include –
• Opening statement.
• your name, email address and a contact
phone number on your resume.
• Key skills & strengths e.g.
• Technical/software skills e.g. Excel, Word,
EFTPOS, Tills.
• Educational history – achievements,
awards, prefect/captain, extra curricula
groups etc
• Employment history, work experience,
volunteer roles, internships etc.
•Highlight your stand-out
features.
Condensing your work history
into 25 words or less can be
challenging - it is a mere, short,
single sentence or two, so
make sure you have the right
information in there to catch
your readers’ attention. It
should describe your best
attributes and
accomplishments in a few
lines, and basically give the
hiring manager a quick look at
why your resume is worth their

• Your address
• Any ailments or disabilities
• Your health status
• Fancy formatting

Cover Letters
A cover letter is a single-page letter that you include with your
job application. When writing a cover letter, you should:
• introduce yourself
• mention the specific job (or type of job) you're applying for
(or looking for)
• show that your skills and experience match the skills and
experience needed to do the job
• encourage the reader to read your resume
• finish with a call to action (for example, asking for an
interview or a meeting).
• Use a different cover letter for each job you apply for.

someone your potential employer can
contact to find out more about you.
