Sampling in statistics and in research

• ‘Universe’ or ‘Population.’

• Sample

Sampling technique

Sample selection process

Types of sampling techniques

Sampling Design
•Definite plan for obtaining a sample from given population.

• Technique /Procedure adopted in selecting sample

• Size of the sample.

•Determined before data are collected.

Researcher must select/prepare a sample design which

should be reliable and appropriate for his research study.
Steps In Sample Design
Type of universe: set of objects to be studied.-finite or infinite.

Sampling unit:geographical -state, district, village . construction unit

house, flat. social family, club, school . individual.

Source list/‘sampling frame’ : from which sample is to be drawn.

Contains names of all items of a universe (for finite universe ).

Size of sample: number of items to be selected from universe .

Optimum sample- fulfills requirements of efficiency,

representativeness, reliability and flexibility.

Parameters of interest: average or other measure concerning

Sample Design
Budgetary constraint

Cost considerations, from practical point of view, major

impact upon decisions relating to size of sample and also
type of sample.
This can lead to use of a non-probability sample.

Sampling procedure

Technique/ Sample Design to be used in selecting items for

sample.

Several sample designs exist- researcher chooses for study.

Good Sampling Design
Must

•result in a truly representative sample.

•be such which results in a small sampling error.
•be viable in the context of funds available for the
research study.
•be such that systematic bias can be controlled in a
better way.

Sample -results of sample study can be applied for

universe with a reasonable level of confidence.
Types of Sample Designs
Stratified Sampling

Cluster sampling

Area sampling

Multi-stage sampling

Sampling with probability proportional to size

Sequential sampling
