▪ Paul Merchant (2005) defined power as the possession of
authority and influence over others
▪ Anthony Giddens, “by power is meant the ability of
individual or groups to make their own concerns or interests
count, even where others resist.”
▪ Max Weber, “power is the probability that one actor within
a social relationship will be in a position to carry out his will
despite resistance…”
AUTHORITY

▪ Official power
▪ Power recognized as rightful
