D’ Alembert’s Ratio Test

This test says if ∑Un is a positive term series and Lim Un+1 = L
Where Un is the nth term of series n ∞ Un
Then
❶ ∑Un is Convergent if L< 1
❷ ∑Un is Divergent if L> 1
If L=1 Test Fails
Proof:

Case1 let L>1

We choose some Ɛ>0 s.t (L-Ɛ)> 1or  >1,= L-Ɛ,
There exist a positive integer m1 s.t
Examples:

D’Alembert’s Ratio Test

Test the convergence of following series.

Ans: Un = {nth term}

Un+1 =
= ×
= ×
= =
Applying limit on both sides,
lim = lim ()
n∞ n∞

= ()
=0<1
Therefore, by D’Alembert’s Ratio Test, the series is convergent.
b) ∑
Ans: Un = √
Un+1 = √

lim =
n∞ =√ × √ ×
= lim √×
n∞
= lim √
n∞

=√
=x
By D’Alembert’s Ratio Test and by comparison test ∑ Un is Divergent.
