Understanding the Case of Bullying

Olweus (1999) defines bullying as a


psychosocial problem of repeatedly
insulting and humiliating others with a
negative impact on perpetrators and
victims of bullies where perpetrates
have more power than victims.

Impact of Social Control Theory on Bullying
Cases
Travis Hirschi (1969) developed the Theory of Social Control to explain why a person
can obey rules and norms. According to him, social control has the potential to determine
a person's behavior, in order to conform to the social norms in the environment. (Adilla,
2009: 57). Hirschi explains that social bonds include four elements: attachment,
involvement, commitment, and belief. Involvement means that the frequency of one's
activity will diminish the inclination of the person concerned to commit crime.
Commitment is understood as an investment of a person in society among others in the
form of a good reputation education and progress in the field of business. Belief is an
element that embodies a person's recognition of good and fair norms in society.
Possible solutions to bullying cases

The solution to a case of bullying can be done by taking comprehensive precautions, starting with children,
families, schools, communities.
• Prevention through the child by empowering the child to:
• The child is able to detect early the possible occurrence of bullying
• the child is capable of fighting when bullies occur to him

Prevention through family, by increasing family resilience and strengthening parenting patterns. Among other
things:
• Infuse religious values and teach love for one another
• Provide a compassionate environment from an early age by showing how to interact between family members.
• Build child confidence, nurture child courage and determination and develop children's ability to socialize

Prevention through school
• Design and create the design of a prevention program that contains a message to students that bully
behavior is not acceptable in school and make a policy “anti bullying”.
• Build effective communication between teachers and students
• Discussions and lectures about bully conduct in school

Prevention via community by building community groups that care about the protection of children
starting at the village/village level
