Are there different

types of heterogeneous
mixtures?
How do you
distinguish these
types from one
another?
Suspension
and
Colloid
Suspensions
• types of mixtures that have particles that
seem to be suspended on the given substance
which is usually a liquid. There are times that
suspensions seem to be homogeneous
mixtures because the particles spread out
after shaking or mixing it thoroughly.
However, the particles eventually settle at
the bottom after some time.
• Particles in a suspension are large
enough to be seen that is why they can
be identified easily.
• Examples of this type of mixture are
muddy water, milk of magnesia, passion
fruit smoothie with seeds, and milk tea
with pearls.
Colloids
• generally considered as heterogeneous
mixtures but also possess properties
homogeneous mixtures. At first look,
they seem to be homogeneous because
of their seemingly uniform composition.
But when viewed under the microscope,
you will actually see bigger particles
that are unevenly spread out.
Tyndall effect
•The Tyndall effect is the
ability to scatter light.
There are several types of colloids.
It is classified based on the particles

mixed into another substance. The

particles are the DISPERSED PHASE
while the substance where it is mixed
is called the DISPERSING MEDIUM.

The table shows examples of

different types of colloids.
TYPES OF
COLLOID
Why do you think there is
no gas dispersed in gas
type of colloid?
How is blood considered a
mixture?
Smog is an example of
colloid with harmful effect
to living organisms.
How can you help lessen
the solid particles
suspended in the air?
