Forces and motion
November 08 - 19 , 2021
By: T. Aurora
Vocabulary words:
1. force - is a push or a pull that can cause an object at rest to move.
2. motion – is the process of an object moving or being moved.
3. effect – result of a particular influence
4. stationary – not moving or not intended to be moved.
5. speed up – accelerate, to move or happen faster
6. direction – the way something or someone moves
7. contact force – is any force that requires contact to occur.
8. non- contact force – is a force which acts on an object without coming physically in contact with it.
9. magnet – is a material or object that produces a magnetic field.
10. magnetic objects – are always made of metal, but not all metals are magnetic.
11. non-magnetic objects – materials which are not attracted by a magnet
12. North pole – is a point on the surface of Earth's Northern Hemisphere at which the
planet's magnetic field directing downwards.
13. South pole – s the point on Earth's Southern Hemisphere where the geomagnetic field lines are
directed vertically upwards.
Pushing and Pulling:
A force is a push or a pull that is applied on an object.
Example:
push
pull
Effects of forces on motion:
We cannot see the force but we can observe its effects. A force can change the movement, speed,
direction and shape of objects.
1. Move a stationary object 2. stop a moving object 3. slow down a moving object
4. Speed up a moving object 5. change the direction of a moving object 6. change the shape of
an object an object.
Types of forces:
contact force- are forces acting between two objects that are physically touching each other.
Example: pushing a cart, we are touching it and applying a force on it to move it forward.
Non- contact forces: Forces that are applied on objects without any physical contact between them.
Example: When a ball is thrown into the air gravitational force will act on the ball and pull it downward. The
force is not in contact with the ball to pull it.
Magnet – is an object that attracts certain materials such as iron and steel. Magnets comes in different
sizes and shapes. When magnet is suspended freely in the air, it always points in the North-South direction.

Exercise 2: Draw an arrow in the box according to the activity in the picture if it is a pull or
push action. You can print out or just write the number then write your answer.
Push- red
Pull- blue
