The world view of
George Soros

• Globalist
• Free society
• Biggest threats
• PRC
• Capitalism itself
• Democracy itself
How Soros broke the
Bank of England

• After ww2, close integration

between countries to stop further
wars
• 1979 ERM (exchange rate
mechanism)
• Made countries in Europe trade
currencies on a fixed level
• Made Banks volnurable
How Soros broke the
Bank of England

• ERM was a bad idea.

• Chained currencies together.
• Hard to regulate a currency when
chained to different currencies.
• Currencies inflate, deflate on their
own.
How Soros broke the
Bank of England

• Britain was in a recession when it

joined the ERM.
• The pound was inflating 3 times
more than the German Mark.
• The RM forced The Bank of
England to buy pounds off the
market
How Soros broke the
Bank of England

• The buying off left the pound

weakened to market speculation,
which is where Soros came in
• He used his Hedge fund and
borrowed a huge amount of
pounds from other hedge funds
or banks
• He then exchanged the borrowed
punds for German Makrs.
How Soros broke the
Bank of England

• He built up over 1.5 billion USD

worth of opposition agains the
pound.
• To earn money on his gamble, the
value of the pound had to drop
drastically, which happened,
when the president of the
Bundesbank mad a vague
statement, which dropped the
value of the Pound in the eyes of
bankers and other rich entities
How Soros broke the
Bank of England

• During the night after the statement,

Soros borrowed amd then suddenly
sold the equivalent of 10 billion USD
worth of pounds, which caused
Havoc on the whole market, causing
a cascade of other people selling
pounds, which suddenly sharply fell
in value.
• This made the British government
buy up over 27 billion pounds off the
market and raise the interest rates
by 2 till the end of the following day
in a desperate effort to stop the
sudden drop in value.
The fallout

• Britain was forced to suspend the

Pounds membership in the ERM.
• The Pound fell by over percent
against the German Mark and
percent against the US dollar in
the next few days.
• This made George Soros and his
Hedge fund over a billion dollars,
while costing the British taxpayer
over 3.3 billion.
The fallout

• The British regulators were able

to stabilize the pound over the
next few years, and by 1997, the
pound was stronger than during
the ERM and its economy had
been growing for over 16
consecutive years.
• It is often debated, if this would
have happened, had Soros not
done his gamble, and some even
say, that he helped the British
economy in the long run.
