Objectives of Talent Identification (TID)

 Main task of TID is to identify healthy children without morphological, functional

or physical disorders, gifted in motor abilities and able to improve in skills in the
field of sports.
 Accordingly, the preference is typically given to the assessment of motor qualities.
 Second preference is given to skill assessment but only in the way of very simple
tests, reflecting the abilities of children to perform some basic (fundamental) skills
required to further master the sports skills critical for the chosen sport.

TH4259 Talent Identification and Development SSSS 2023 Oct 11, 2023
8
Objectives of Talent Identification (TID)

 No specific skill tests should be used, as children are not supposed to possess any
specific skills, as they are not yet trained in the sport chosen.
 The ratio between general and specific tests is usually expressed as 70:30.
 On completion of the TID children proceed to POST-IDENTIFICATION talent
development (TRAINING)

Talent Confirmation

 The next stage of Talent Recognition could be termed as Talent Confirmation

(TCo).
 Often termed as Intermediate Selection in East European models of TID and Talent
Development, it practically has Talent Placement for the objective.
 The major question to answer is whether the potential of Talent Identified child is
sufficient to reach Junior National level (no limiting factors in health, motor
qualities, skills, psychological sphere etc.).
 Time frame wise, Talent Confirmation may occur after 1-2 years of training, post
Talent Identification.

TH4259 Talent Identification and Development SSSS 2023 Oct 11, 2023
28
Talent Confirmation

 In Western Models it sounds as directing athletes to the sports in which they are likely
to succeed and pointing out inherent limitations in their capacity (Woodman, L., 1985).
 Tests for this phase must be both general and specific. In addition to the TID general
tests battery, specific tests reflecting new skills learned through training must certainly
be added.
 Among other critically important markers at Talent Confirmation are:
 Rate of Progression of certain qualities
 Trainability (or coachability) reflecting the responsiveness of the athlete to the training
and competitive loads
 Motor Learning efficiency

Talent Orientation

 Next phase of Talent Recognition can be termed as Talent Orientation (TOr).

 After three to five years of training there are still issues unaddressed by traditional
model of Talent Identification and Development.
 First issue: which event or game role/position within chosen sport is to be identified
for further specialized training?
 Examples being in Swimming – the style (Freestyle, Butterfly, Back Stroke,
Breaststroke) and the event; in Athletics – the Event (Discus, Shot, Javelin, Hammer

Talent Orientation

 Second issue: whether an athlete possesses physical, technical, tactical, functional and
psychological reserves to reach International level of performance in major
competitions.
 Thus, further thorough examination of motor qualities, specific skills, physiological,
psychological reserves and actual competition performance is highly advisable.
 Competition Performance and performance in the specific tests are among the key
indicators.
 Obviously at which position or in which event this performance is best.
 Example Usain Bolt migration from 200m to 100m and then perfect both

Talent Orientation contd.

 Tests should be of a very specific nature. Only some of them should reflect general physical fitness
and more rather on maintenance issue.
 Ratio between general and specific tests is about 30:70. Moreover, general tests are selected as per
the requirements of the event. Performance is of a great importance.
 I - the necessity of having proper competitive practice.
 II - if there is no performance so far at this age, we can hardly expect it in nearest future.
 Final decision has to be taken after obtaining the opinion of experts in respective events. When
talent orientation is complete, comes the time to get into focused highly specialised training in the
identified event.

swimmers during the Age-Group MILO-PRAM Malaysia National Championships
which was held in Malacca on 1st to 3rd April 2011.

as follows:

Talent Selection

 Finally, it seems more convenient to use the term Talent Selection (TSE) as:
 Selection of the best performing athletes for the purpose of joining
 the camp
 the squad, or
 the team
in preparation for particular competitions
 The DIRECT selection through the specifically identified competition/tournament
is EVENTUALLY the outcome

Talent Selection

 It is occurring periodically when best of

the best need to be selected.
 It actually has nothing to do with talent
identification, it is rather picking the
right ones from among the best available
TALENT POOL for preparation to a
particular high standard competitions.
 And obviously the top performance in
the selection competitions (selection
trials) is an ultimate objective.

Logic of the Assessment Progression

TID
• Motor qualities in BASIC manifestation

TCO
• Motor qualities in relation to SPORT SPECIFIC Manifestations

TOR
• Motor qualities in EVENT SPECIFIC Manifestations

TH4259 Talent Identification and Development SSSS 2023 Oct 11, 2023
76
Why is that?

 At TID children ARE NOT

TID
• Motor qualities in BASIC SUPPOSED to know much of specific
manifestation
skills, they aren’t trained for that YET
 At TCO they are already trained to
TCO
• Motor qualities in relation to SPORT
some extent in the sports of choice,
SPECIFIC Manifestations hence, can be tested SPECIFICALLY
 TOR is meant for finalization of the
TOR event choice; hence testing has to be
• Motor qualities in EVENT SPECIFIC MAXIMALLY SPECIFIC
Manifestations
