REDOX REACTIONS
Redox reactions involves simultaneous oxidation and
reduction reactions.
Oxidation is gain of oxygen

Reduction is loss of oxygen

Redox reactions involves the gain and loss of oxygen
Oxidising agent & Reducing agent
o An oxidising agent is defined as a substance that
oxidises another substance and is itself reduced.
 A reducing agent is defined as a substance that
reduces another substance and is itself oxidized.
Class work

1. Show that this reaction is a redox reaction.

2. Identify the reduction taking place, oxidation taking
place, oxidizing agent and reducing agent.
Oxidation number/Oxidation state
•Oxidation state tells you how many electrons each atom of an
element has gained, lost or shared in forming a compound.
•The oxidation state is usually written as a Roman numeral.
•The oxidation number of elements in their uncombined state is
zero
•The oxidation number of a monatomic ion is the same as the
charge on the ion
•The sum of the oxidation numbers in a compound is zero
•The sum of the oxidation numbers in an ion is equal to the
charge on the ion.
•Transition elements have variable oxidation numbers.
