Biotic Factors Abiotic Factors

Biotic vs Abiotic Factors
Biotic = living (BIO = life)
Abiotic = nonliving (A = without)
Biotic factors are all of the living things in an
environment.

Abiotic factors are all of the nonliving things

in an environment.
Outside
Go outside. List as many biotic and abiotic
factors that you can come up with.

Biotic Factors Abiotic Factors

Animals, plants, people, birds Water, sunlight, soil, rocks,

wind, temperature
Do biotic and abiotic factors
affect each other?
Do biotic and abiotic factors
affect each other?

If there is no water…can anything grow or survive?

If it is extremely cold one winter, will that affect

whether an animal makes it?
Do biotic and abiotic factors
affect each other?
If there is no water…can anything grow or survive?
No!
If it is extremely cold one winter, will that affect
whether an animal makes it?
No!

So, abiotic and biotic DO affect each other. Even

though water and temperature aren’t living
things, they DO affect living things!

Independent Practice
Tell me a story of about how abiotic and biotic
factors play a role in your life.

For example, “Everyday morning I wake up and brush my

teeth with toothpaste. Then I say hi to my mom and eat a
bowl of cereal. I change my clothes, feed the dog, and
walk outside to catch the bus. Sometimes I hear birds
chirping on the way.”
Abiotic factors: toothpaste, cereal, bus
Biotic Factors: My mom, my dog, birds

You need to include at least 3 abiotic factors and 3

biotic factors and list them or draw them at the
end.
