Thumb Up and Down

Knowing the Research SOP

4
1. In writing a
problem statement it
can help the
researcher put the
topic into context and
will have a deeper
understanding of its
significance.

5
2. Statement of the
problem should not
always address the
relevance of the
research; why is it
important to.

6
3. One of the
purposes of the
statement of the
problem is to
describe the
substantive focus of
the research study.

7
4. To frame it as a
practical problem
and thereby, develop
its significance is one
of the purposes of
statement of the
problem.

8
5. A clear and
straight forward
statement of the
problem will inform
and impress the
reader in grasping
the issues that your
proposed research
will address.

9
6. To be able to
forecast the literature
to be discussed in
the second section,
limitations of the
study should not be
included in the
statement of the
problem.

10
7. The statement of
the problem is the
heart and soul of
your research.

11
8. SOP is consists
of two parts, the
general problem and
the specific problem.

12
9. Descriptive
questions are the
one that aims to
quantitatively
describe a variable.

13
10. Inferential
questions are the
one that aim to
determine the
significant
relationship or
significant
differences of a
variable.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• The statement of a problem defines
and describes the research
hypothesis or question/s, along with
the broad method that will be used to
solve the problem.
• A well- formulated statement of the
problem sets the stage for the rest of
our study, including how we will
address the problem and any
anticipated outcomes or answers.

24
WHY SOP IS IMPORTANT?
Once you have very clear laid out
the core issue, problem or question that
you’re investigating, you’ll have a much
sharper focus for conducting and
writing up the rest of your study. A clear
and straight forward statement will also
inform and impress your reader in
grasping the issues that your proposed
research will address.

25
WHY SOP IS IMPORTANT?
The Statement of the Problem
is the ‘heart and soul’ of your
research. It becomes your
guiding post for future actions.

26
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• SOP consists of 2 parts: The general
problem and the specific problem.
• The Statement of the problem
consists of questions and differences
of the variables.
• The answer to the questions may be
gathered through the instrument,
which includes interviews,
questionnaires, pore-test and post-
test or other data gathering methods.

27
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• The general problem is consist of a
sentence or sentences as opening of your
SOP. In addition, general problem involves
stating the main research problem or it deals
with stating the core issue of your research.
• Mirrors what you have stated or written in
your research title.
• General problem is in declarative sentence
form.
• You may start with the following phrases:
- The aim of this study is to determine…..
- This research paper aims to explore ……
