Fasces are a badge of authority in
ancient Rome, consisting of a bundle of
rods and an ax with a blade sticking out.
They were carried by lictors, or
attendants, of magistrates and
symbolized penal power.

-considered an extreme form of
authoritarianism, in which government
controls almost all aspects of the public
and private lives of the people.

TOLITARIANISM VS.
FASCISM
• fascism and totalitarianism are similar—both being forms of
authoritarianism—and often used interchangeably, there are some
differences between the two.
• Fascism is a much older political ideology than totalitarianism. A more
extreme rightwing authoritarian concept, fascism demands absolute and
uncompromising loyalty to the nation or predominant race.
• Totalitarian regimes rely mainly on government propaganda machinery to
publicize the cause of the nation and spread half-truths or false stories
about the failures of other systems and the successes of the regime.
