Identify the Gods and Goddesses
Norse Mythology
 Refers to the Scandinavian mythological
framework that was upheld during and around
the time of the Viking Age (c. 790- c. 1100
CE).
 A creation myth that has the first Gods
slaying a giant and turning his body parts
into the world.
Origin of Norse
mythology
- Norse myths tell about the end
of the world.
- The destruction of the world in
this battle, called
Ragnarok, is followed by the
creation of a new, more peaceful
world.
- Norse mythology is the
body of mythology
practiced in Scandinavia.
Yggdrasil
An enormous ash tree
that connects the nine
worlds of Norse
Cosmology.

- Sometimes called
Hoddmímis holt,

The Norse gods and goddesses belong
to two major clans:

Æsir Vanir
known as the contains the
main Gods fertility

Odin
-He was the son of the
God Borr and the
Jötunn Bestla,
-Chief god of the Norse
pantheon.
Odin
-Father of many gods and
heroes with four different
partners,
-Odin was often depicted
riding upon Sleipnir.

-He was famous for
sacrificing one of his eyes.
Borr
-Father of Odin, Vili and
Vé.
- Borr is sometimes
taken to signify the
earth, or the very first
mountain.
Frigg
- Odin’s wife.
-Goddess of marriage,
motherhood, clairvoyance,
and prophecy.
-Frigg was a very
protective mother.
Balder
-God of light and
purity.
-Son of Odin and
Frigg.
-He is one of the most
beloved gods in the
Norse pantheon.
Bragi
-God of poetry,
eloquence, and wisdom.
-Son of Odin and Frigg.
-His name comes from
the word "bragr", which
means "poetry.
Bragi
-He is a master of
persuasive speech.
-Inventor of skaldic
poetry.
Hermod
- Norse god of speed and
messenger of the gods.
-He is the son of Odin
and Frigg.
Tyr
-Norse god of war,
justice, and oaths.
-Son of Odin and Frigg
-He is often depicted as a
one-handed man with a
spear and a shield.
Loki
-God of mischief,
chaos, and trickery.
- He conceived a
scheme to cause the
death of Balder.
LOki
-He is the son of the
giants Farbauti and
Laufey.
- Known as the Father of
Monsters.
Hoder
-God of darkness,
blindness, and winter.
-He is the son of Odin
and Frigg.
Thor
-God of thunder,
lightning, storms, and
strength
-He is the son of Odin
and jörð, the earth
goddess.
Thor
- He has a dwarf-forged
hammer named Mjöllnir.
- Thor is known for his
quick temper and his love
of feasting and drinking.
Freya
- Norse goddess of love,
beauty, fertility, and magic.
-She is the daughter of
Njörd and Nerthus.
Freyr
-Norse god of fertility,
peace, prosperity, and
sunshine.
-He is the son of Njord
and Nerthus.
-A generous god.
Heimdall
- Norse god of
vigilance, protection
and the rainbow bridge
Bifröst.
- He was the son of
Odin.
Heimdall
-Depicted as a tall,
muscular man with a
golden horn and a sword.
Hel
-Goddess of death, the
underworld, and the
dead.
- The daughter of Loki.
Njord
-God of the sea, wind,
and fishing.
-Father of Freyja and
Freyr.
Vidar
-God of vengeance,
silence, and resilience.
-He is the son of Odin
and Gríðr, a giantess.
Vidar
-In fact, it was Vidar who
would kill Fenrir, and
survive Ragnarok to
create the new world.
Vale
- God of the hunt, archery,
and the wilderness.
-He is the son of Odin and
Rind, a giantess
-An archer and survivor
of Ragnarok.
Forseti
-God of justice,
reconciliation, and truth.
-He is the son of the god
Balder.
-He is known for his
fairness.
Mimir
-A wise Æsir God.
-He is a symbol of
knowledge, wisdom, and
the power of nature.
Mimir
-Wise giant who lives by
the well located at the root
of the world tree
Yggdrasil.
-Mímir was beheaded by
the Vanir during the Æsir–
Vanir War.
Ullr
-God of winter, skiing,
hunting, and archery.
-Son of Sif and the
stepson of the mighty
Thor.
Iðunn
- The goddess of youth,
spring and rejuvenation.
- Young woman with a
basket of golden apples,
which she gives to the
gods to keep them young
and immortal.
