Definition of Tourism
Tourism is the temporary short-term movement
of people to destinations outside the places
where they normally live and work and their
activities during their stay at these destinations.
 Definition of Hospitality
Hospitality is derived from the latin word hospitare, which
means “to receive as a guest.
 Meaning of Tourist
A tourist is a person who visits a country other than
that in which he or she usually resides for a period of
at least 24 hours.
 2 Classes of Visitors
1. Tourist – Temporary visitors staying at least 24 hours, whose
purpose could be as:
a. Leisure
b. Business
c. Family
d. Mission
e. Meeting

2. Excursionists – Temporary visitors staying less than 24 hours in the

destination visited and making an overnight stay
 Elements of Travel
A. Distance – Travelers, on this basis, are individuals who travel at least
100 miles in one direction from home.
B. Length of Stay at the Destination – It could be more than 24 hours
or less than 24 hours.
C. Residence of the Traveler – It is important to know where people
live.
D. Purpose of Travel – it could be business, visiting friends,
recreational activities.
 The Nature of a Tour
1. Domestic Tourism – refers to travel taken exclusively within the
national boundaries of the traveler’s country.

2. International Tourism – involves the movement of people across

international boundaries.
