• TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES, BIOSPHERE RESERVES
AND NATIONAL PARKS
CONSERVATION
• Conservation of plants and animals means to protect them along with their habitats or
natural environment where they are adapted to live.
• Some of the ways by which species can be conserved are
• by encouraging preservation of natural habitats,
• afforestation,
• preventing overgrazing and
• checking illegal hunting.
• Building protected areas such as wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and biosphere reserves
are some important measures.
WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES
• A wildlife sanctuary is a region which provides protection and suitable living conditions to
wild animals, especially endangered, threatened species and migratory birds.

• The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, National Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary for conserving gharial,
Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary near Chennai are some of the famous sanctuaries of India.
NATIONAL PARKS
• A national park is a large area of land owned by the government, which offers protection to
animal and plant species and provides public recreation.

• Kaziranga National Park, Jaldapara National Park, Corbett National Park, Dudhwa National
park and Bandhavgarh National Park are some of the examples of national parks
BIOSPHERE RESERVES
• A biosphere reserve is a huge area that offers protection to plants, animals and also the tribal
communities that may exist in the forest area.
• It maintains the biodiversity and culture of an area. It may contain other protected areas like
wildlife sanctuaries and national parks in it.
• Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve in Uttarakhand and Khangchendzonga National Park (also
Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve) in Sikkim are some examples of biosphere reserves
