The 19th Century Technologies
Transformed the Way People Lived

 Technology has revolutionized our world and

daily lives.

 Technology has also given us brand new

devices in recent decades.

The first steam-powered machine was built
in 1698 by the English military engineer
Thomas Savery (c. 1650–1715).

5
The first documented version of a typewriter
was in 1575 when an Italian printmaker
named Francesco Rampazetto created the
scrittura tattile, which was a machine made
to impress letters into the paper.

In 1801 and 1808 an Italian

named Pellegrino Turri invented a typewriter
used to help his blind friend, Countess
Carolina Fantoni da Fivizzano, have the
ability to write.

6
The Colt Paterson revolver was the first
practical revolving-cylinder handgun ever
made. Invented by Samuel Colt in 1831 and
patented in 1836, the Colt Paterson revolver
became synonymous with Texas. The
Republic of Texas served as its proving
ground and was nearly the only market for
Colt’s revolutionary product.

The Colt Paterson gave Texans the firepower

to defend themselves against attacks, as well
as put native populations on the defensive.

7
Elias Howe Jr. ( July 9, 1819 –
October 3, 1867) was an
American inventor best known for
his creation of the modern
lockstitch sewing machine.

• 1851—Isaac Singer invents his

eponymous sewing machine, and four
years later, patents a sewing machine
motor.

8
The Benz Patent-Motorwagen ("patent
motorcar"), built in 1885 by the
German Carl Benz, is widely regarded
as the world's first practical
modern automobile.

Due to the creation of the Patent-

Motorwagen, Benz has been hailed as
the father and inventor of the
automobile.

9
In 1859, Nathan Ames of the state of Michigan in the United
States invented something he called Revolving Stairs.

10
History of Mercedes-Benz

In 1901, he created the Benz

Patent Motorwagen, which
was the first gasoline car and
introduced it to the public
under Daimler Motors
Corporation. Then, in 1902, an
Austrian automobile
entrepreneur, Emil Jellinek,
trademarked the name
“Mercedes” after Mercedes
Jellinek, his daughter.

11
Modern technology
Pasteurization

 Process of heating
dairy products to kill
the harmful bacteria
that caused spoilage
 Louis Pasteur (1822-1895)
proved that microscopic
organisms caused disease.
12
Modern technology
Telephone
 Allows faster and
easy communication
 Alexander Graham
Bell

13
Philippine Inventions
 Developing country
 Contributes to the global
advancement of science and
technology
 Most vulnerable country in
term of natural disasters
 Built from indigenous
materials

Filipino invention #1: Bamboo incubator

• Premature babies (infants born

before the mother’s 37th week of
pregnancy) are typically
underdeveloped and low in body fat
percentage, inhibiting their ability
to maintain their normal body
temperature.

• The bamboo incubator, widely

credited as the brainchild of Dr. Fe
del Mundo.

15
Born on November 27, 1911, National
Scientist Dr. Fe del Mundo was a Filipina of
many firsts.

•Dr. del Mundo fought gender inequality

through academic excellence, and brought
much-needed medical care to women and
children during World War II.

•She also made significant contributions to

our knowledge and treatment of lethal
diseases in the Philippines.

16
Filipino invention #2: Erythromycin

Dr. Abelardo Aguilar. In 1949, via soil

samples he obtained from his backyard, Dr.
Aguilar stumbled
upon 𝘚 𝘵 𝘳 𝘦 𝘱 𝘵 𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘤 𝘦 𝘴
𝘦 𝘳 𝘺 𝘵 𝘩 𝘳 𝘢 𝘦 𝘶 𝘴 (now 𝘚 𝘢 𝘤 𝘤 𝘩 𝘢 𝘳 𝘰 𝘱
𝘰 𝘭 𝘺 𝘴 𝘱 𝘰 𝘳 𝘢 𝘦 𝘳 𝘺 𝘵 𝘩 𝘳 𝘢 𝘦 𝘢 ), the
bacteria that would lead to the discovery of
erythromycin.

Erythromycin is an antibiotic used in

treating infections of the respiratory tract,
Legionnaire’s disease, and diphtheria, as
well as urinary tract infections and sexually
transmitted diseases such as syphilis.

17
During that time, Dr. Aguilar worked under Eli Lily Co., a
pharmaceutical company from the United States. The
company marketed erythromycin under the brand name
Ilosone, earning billions of dollars from the drug.
Unfortunately, international patent laws stood in the
way of him getting his fair share of the fruits of his
discovery.

His 40-year struggle to receive royalties from the drug he

discovered ended when he died at the age of 76.During

Filipino invention #3: The PC chipset

Diosdado Banatao, a native from

Cagayan Valley, developed the first
single-chip 16-bit microprocessor-
based calculator in the 1970s. He
went on to create the world’s first
system logic chip sets in 1981, which
allowed the integration of all of a
computer’s essential data processing
features into a small package

19
Filipino invention #4: Challenge 21

 Challenge 21, a relatively new board game

 The mind behind this remarkable Filipino

invention is Mr. Leonardo Meija Yu, a 68-
year-old retired economics professor and
Philippine Ports Authority officer.

20
Filipino invention #5: Mango flowering

 National Scientist Ramon Barba

 He proposed an alternative: the use of a

chemical spray called Etherel (2-
chloroethylphosphonic acid). His idea was
met with derision and rejected for
experiments, until one day, his friends Mr. and
Mrs. Jose Quimson allowed him to conduct a
trial using 400 mango trees.

 Sustainable Alternative Lighting lamp
 Environment-friendly light source that runs
on saltwater
 Invented by Aisa Mojeno
