Argumentative

Writing

6 grade
English- ELL
Common Core Standard
Standard: 6. WS-RW.2

Standard 5 from the Writing Strand.

Idaho State Department of Education
states that the 6th grade level should be
able to “write arguments that
introduce and support a distinct point
of view with relevant claims, evidence
and reasoning; demonstrate an
understanding of the topic; and
provide a concluding section that
follows from the argument presented”.
What is argumentative writing?
• “The argumentative essay is a genre of
writing that requires the student to
investigate a topic; collect, generate,
and evaluate evidence; and establish a
position on the topic in a concise
manner” (Purdue OWL).
• A type of writing that has you stand on
a side, which is then backed up by
reasons and evidence. (you write about
why you chose that side)
Examples
 Apples are better than oranges.
 Soccer is the best/worst sport.
 Summer is better than winter.

Argumentative essays are about your stance

on a topic, and then prove your stance to us.

Claim/topic, reasoning and then evidence.

• Apples are better than oranges, okay but

why?
• Soccer is the best sport (your opinion)/ but
why? (use evidence)
Your turn!
• Turn to your partner(s) and tell your
partner of your opinion.
• And write them down on the paper
• And give at least one reason to your
opinion.

o What is the worst or best subject

at school?
o What is the best or worst holiday
of the year?
o What is the best sport?
o Other topics you can think of
What should it look
like?

• Use this format in the future to

write your essay.
• It may look like a lot but take it
one step at a time.
• AGAIN, remember, go slow and
do one box at a time
