Simple Past
We use the simple past to talk about past time events. These event these
events are usually no longer important nor connected to the present.
• I played soccer last year.
Does this activity from last year affect my present?
We normally use finished time expressions with the simple past:
• Last year • A day ago
• Last month • In 1999
• Yesterday • 2004
Affirmative Formula: subject + past verb + object/complement
• I dance at the party. • I danced at the party yesterday.
• She eats soup this year. • She ate soup last year.
• They stop the car. • They stopped the car.
Negative Formula: subject + did not (didn’t) + base form+ object/complement
• I didn’t dance at the party.
• She didn’t eat soup this year.
• They didn’t stop the car.
Yes and no questions: did + subject + base form + object
• I danced at the party yesterday.
• She ate soup last year.
• They stopped the car.
• Did you dance at the party yesterday? + Yes, I did. - No, I didn’t.
• Did she eat soup last year?
• Did they stop the car?
