1. What is the ASSURE Model?

The ASSURE model was developed by Heinich, R., Molenda, M., Russell, J. D., & Smaldino, S. E. in their book
titled "Instructional Media and Technologies for Learning" (1999).

The ASSURE model is an instructional system or guideline that teachers can use to develop lesson plans
which integrate the use of technology and media (Smaldino, Lowther & Russell, 2008).

The ASSURE model provides a systematic approach to designing lessons. This means that it ensures that
instructional materials focus on achieving specific learning outcomes and that learners are actively engaged in
the learning process. Also, learners always know what they're expected to learn and how.

1 Analyze learners
Begin by understanding the characteristics and needs of the learners.

General character Specific entry competencies learning styles

identify your learners - know what your learners are - how an individual perceives,
capable of doing interacts with and responds
Age: children, teenagers, adults,
seniors emotionally to the learning
Language Proficiency, environment
Gender: male, female Prerequisite Courses,
Education Level: high school Certifications, Technical Skills,
graduates, college students Visual Learners, Auditory
Work Experience, Educational Learners, Reading/Writing
Degrees, Physical Fitness Learners
2 State objectives
A statement of what will be achieved, not how it will be achieved.

Stating who the subject of the learning is, that is, whose abilities are
Audience going to change.

Describing the new observable abilities that the learner will have after
Behavior the learning, using appropriate action terms.

Conditions Presenting the conditions under which the performance should be

observed.

Degree Providing the standard or criteria by which acceptable performance will

be judged
2 State objectives
Example
Fifth grade social studies students (Audience) will be able to
name at least 90% (Degree) of the state capitols (Behavior)
when given a list of states (Condition).

Fourth-grade math students (Audience) will be able to perform

three-digit addition and subtraction (Behavior) with at least 95%
accuracy (Degree) when presented with math problems
(Condition).
3 Select methods, media, and materials
The stage of selecting suitable teaching methods and media to achieve the
learning objectives, and determining the materials for their execution

Three Stages of Media Selection

Choosing methods Choosing media Choosing materials

1. Selecting the appropriate 2. Choosing the type of media 3. Selecting, modifying, or

5 Require learner participation
Active participation in the learning process enhances learning.

Behaviorist Perspective
- learning is a process of trying various behaviors and keeping those that lead to favorable results.

Cognitivists Perspective
- learners build up a mental schemata when their minds are actively engaged in struggling to
remember or apply a new concept or principle

Constructivists Perspective
- learning is at active process where knowledge is built on the basis of experience

Social Psychologists Perspective

- interpersonal communication as the social basis for knowledge acquisition
6 Evaluate and revise
Designed to detect and correct learning/teaching problems and difficulties
with the instruction that may interfere with student achievement

Assessment of Learner Achievement

- Did students learn what they were suppose to learn?

Evaluation of Methods and Media

-Were the instructional methods and materials effective?

Revision
-What changes need to be made in the lesson?
4. Conclusion.
