Percentage

Composition
S9MT-IIj20
•Determine the percentage composition
of a compound given its chemical
formula and vice versa.
Activity 1: TRUE or FALSE!
1. Mole concept is a convenient method of expressing
the amount of a substance.
2. The Avogadro’s number is equivalent to 6.02x1024
3. Molecule is the smallest particle of an element.
4. One mole of any substance is equivalent to 6.02x1024
5. Mole is the SI Unit to measure the amount of
substance.
OBJECTIVES:
• Define percentage of composition.
• Appreciate the importance percentage of
composition in our life.
• Solve problems involving percentage of
composition.
DIFFICULT TERMS:
• Percentage – a rate, number, or amount in
each hundred.
• Composition – the nature of something’s
ingredients or constituents.
Let’s try this!!!
• You are 50 in your section with 21 boys and 29 girls. If
you will be asked what percent of the class are boys and
what percent are girls, how are you going to compute for
the answer?
• If you will be asked to compute for the percentage of oxygen
and hydrogen in water, how are you going to do it?
What is Percentage Composition?
• Indicates the relative amount of each
element present in a compound.
3 ways to calculate for the Percentage
Composition of an element.
• Step 1: Calculate the molar mass.

• Step 2: Divide the subtotal for each element’s mass by

the molar mass.

• Step 3: Multiply by 100 to convert to a percentage.

EXAMPLE
• Calculate the percentage composition of water.

• Step 1: H₂O
(Calculate the molar mass)

Hydrogen – 1.01 x 2 = 2.02

 Oxygen - 16.00 x 1 = 16.00
________
18.02 g/mol or M
• Step 2: (Divide the subtotal for each element’s mass by
the molar mass.)
Hydrogen - 2.02 ÷ 18.02 = 0.1121
Oxygen - 16.00 ÷ 18.02 = 0.8879
• Step 3: (Multiply by 100 to convert to a percentage.)
Hydrogen - 0.1121 x 100 = 11.21%
Oxygen - 0.8879 x 100 = 88.79%

Therefore, Water is composed of 11.21% Hydrogen and

88.79% Oxygen.
SOLVE
ME!!!
• Each group will be given a problem to solve. A correct
answer or solution to the problem corresponds to a
puzzle the group must form. Each puzzle contains a
picture that matches to a certain kind of activity, the
group must perform.
• NOTE: Show your solution on the board!!
1. What percent of glucose,
C6H12O6, is carbon?

2. What percent of AgNO3

is silver?
2. Calculate the percentage
composition of Oxygen in
Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4)
GENERALIZATION
• How did you come up with your answers?
• How is percentage composition used in real life?
• Why is it important for us to calculate the
percentage composition of a substance?
• How are we affected by this in our daily life?
Covid-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic loss of human life
worldwide. Vaccination is now offering a way to transition out of
this pandemic and is provided by the national government.
The Rural Health Unit of Salvador has listed 1,114 students
living in our district. The total number of vaccinated and
unvaccinated students are 563 and 551 respectively. Using the
same concept we learned in Percentage composition, how many
percent are the vaccinated and unvaccinated students of Salvador.
Show your solution.
Direction: Complete the following table below. Use your periodic
table to answer the activity.

MOVING!
• Directions: Conduct a survey with your own chosen topic.
Use at least 5 choices (ex. Favorite Movie Genre: Horror, Sci-
Fi, Romance, Comedy and Action). Do this survey with your
classmates as your respondents. Collect the data and calculate
the percentage composition of every gathered data. Then
create a pie chart showing the result of your survey along with
the solution in a long bond paper. Make it creative and
colorful. Use the rubric below as guidelines for making this
activity.
